| A Note to Dean Supporters... |
|
I sympathize with your candidate's recent campaign troubles. My man Kerry was in a similar position 2 months ago - with sagging poll numbers and a staff shakeup. He was all but written off by the media even before the changes in his campaign were made. Dean was flying high and his crash has been swift and decisive. I believe he will remain in this for a while longer and, if for no other reason, hostory would favor him as the only one besides Kerry who still has a shot at the nomination. (Remember, history tells us you must be in the top 3 in IA and the top 2 in NH to have a shot at the nomination.) I have no doubt Dean will make some kind of comeback by parlaying his grassroots/Gore support into close seconds or a victory in one or more of the February states.
However, and this is a big however, we here on DU have been debating/flaming the merits of these candidates for months and we see the writing on the wall. The voters in Iowa and NH have spoken and they want to elect a Democrat who they think is best against Bush. They want John Kerry. Some of you have known me as a ruthless critic of Dean's and then a recent convert to his cause before going with my heart and relishing Kerry's recent comeback. If there were ever a moment to rally early and decisively behind a presumptive frontrunner, now is the time. Let's surprise the Repukes who hope Dean's troubles will bring about a brokered convention or an exteneded primary contest. The time is now. Join the Kerry campaign and work your heart out for the Democrats' best hope to beat Bush.
For those still unconvinced, try thinking of it this way. The Repukes have made clear their intention to make Kerry's "liberal voting record" the issue, along with his close association with Ted Kennedy. This is a great victory for us Dems because it shows that Kerry has effectively neautralized the Bush team's previous plan of running this election on national security. A fight on domestic policy is a fight we Dems are sure to win. You can do your part by joining John Kerry now. There is not a second to lose.

You think John Edwards or Wesley Clark would have to beg and plead in dozens of threads for Dean supporters to come aboard??
Or Kucinich, if he had a chance of winning?
Maybe that says something about YOUR candidate??
Two fucking states doesn't equal a nomination. Especially given historical precedents of Presidents who didn't win either. Ask Bill Clinton.
Not that you're gonna get a different answer from me, even if Kerry takes every state from now till Super Tuesday. :puke:

It is not time to change over.....By a long shot, what would that accomplish except to make sure my candidate loses.....thats is what the general election is about....Dear God Almighty,,,May the best Man Win.. if you think Kerry is the man we will know at the convention until that I am stickin' with my candidate. He is the best.

I'm sticking with him until the end. This campaign is about taking back our country. I'll vote for Kerry if he gets the nom, but I'm not going to lay down so he can glide across my back to get it.

but I'd rather see an attack or smear thread against my candidate than one of these semi-pious, for the 'good of the party' join with my candidate today threads.
A good hard campaign is the best way to accomplish several goals:
- battle test a candidate - keep Bush bashing from multiple candidates in the media - keep the Rove machine off guard - excite Democrats, raise awareness and participation
We'll join up with the nominee; until then, the candidate we chose to support is the "best" candidate.

God, if we gave up that easy we wouldn't have gotten where we are to begin with.
I will support whomever gets the nomination with all my heart, BUT I still am backing Dean and will continue to do so because I believe in him. just because the people in Iowa and NH disagree doesn't sway me. Let's see what happens when we get to some states with a bit of 'color' and are more diverse first.

I am really getting tired of this idea that two states determine who the candidate is. Why do Kerry supporters have such a problem with letting ALL Democrats decide who the nominee is? Or do you people really believe that New Hampshire and Iowa represent a legitimate cross-section of Democrats in this country?

Dean is not out of it yet. Kerry is hardly a shoe-in yet. There is a long way to go and many many votes yet to be cast. This message is premature and presumptuous. The voters in Iowa and New Hampshire are a tiny fraction of the voting populace, and they do not determine who wins nor do they affect my loyalty to the person I believe in. I am no fair-weather friend.
This message hardly entices me to support Kerry. In fact the more I learn about Kerry, the less I like him. I adore Al Gore and I adore the man he has endorsed, Howard Dean. My loyalty is not for sale at the first sign of trouble.
I am not unconvinced. I have a candidate I whole-heartedly support, and that is Howard Dean. If he leaves the race, I will then consider the options that remain. But I will not be "working my heart out" for John Kerry. Not unless he can manage to win my heart the way Dean has. Which I very much doubt he can.
In the meantime, I'll be canvassing for Dean in Delaware this weekend.

Literally, a bandwagon is a wagon that carries the band in a parade. Riding on the bandwagon is popular since one can enjoy the music, conveniently without walking. The phrase "jumping on the bandwagon" is therefore used in the sense of "joining an increasingly popular trend". This is especially true for voting: Here, the bandwagon effect refers to the phenomenon that people vote for those candidates or parties at stake who are likely to succeed. By that, they hope to be on the 'winner's side' in the end.
