He was offered another position, but didn't want to be demoted.

I think he was let go after disagreements about the strategy for the primaries next week more than anything else.

because he did his job brillently.

He helped build Dean's campaign up from nothing by inovative means, but maybe the game has changed with Dean's growing popularity. Maybe it is time to bring on the closing pitcher.

So he didn't do the full 9 innings, he did 8 better than anybody else could have done.
