18. He didn't walk away.
It's just that he hasn't received adequate press coverage, and the coverage he has received has been very skewed, so most people don't know all that he has done. I think it is a shame that our last two Presidential nominees both conducted themselves with integrity and respect, yet many think less of them because of the perception that they didn't fight hard enough. It's almost like some wanted Gore and Kerry to fight as dirty as their opposition did. I regret that they didn't win, but I respect the fact that they chose to take the ethical high road.

101. Conyers and his praise of Kerry/Edwards post-election efforts
There are a few people in this and other Kerry-related threads that need to read this before they bash Kerry for "walking away, etc."

"Fighting for Every Voter"

A few more words about an issue that is of the utmost importance to me.

As political candidates, we spend considerable time and effort every election cycle fighting for votes. After the election, whether won or lost, many candidates leave the irregularities of the election behind. But we owe the voters more than that. When voters are disenfrachised, we owe it to them to seek justice and expose the truth. That is why I have been so proud of the Kerry-Edwards campaign's ongoing involvement in the investigation and litigation of what went wrong in Ohio. I wrote to the candidates recently to ask that they continue to be involved in this important endeavor.

This is not about the past. It is about figuring out what went wrong and why -- and then getting the next election right, not for the Democratic Party, but for all of the voters.

Best Question: Since there's no downside to Impeachment.
Rationalizations for inaction, like the ones above and whatever Kerry's may be, have it backwards.

You impeach on principle, not for partisan advantage. The "strategery" of waiting cuts the moral force out from under the effort.

Calls for "backlash" from the DC/Euphemedia Analstocracy are nearly laughable, as is their bogey-man of the Clinton impeachment farce being a model for anything. So if he's concerned about those he needs to get his head out of the beltway sphincter muscle for while.

Ironically, since Kerry supports Censure, he has already made a conclusion about there being a criminal in the WH. You'd think he'd be more vocal about the need to impeach. That he might, you know, lead?

Kerry could certainly claim that as a "potential jury member" he can't pre-judge on removal, but that doesn't get him off the hook for supporting/promoting the effort to accuse (impeach). His failure to do so makes him complicit with the spying, torture, and terrorizing the nation into war.

But I wouldn't expect him to open a mouth -- which is all he needed to do after 10-hour poll-tax-lines in Ohio, or on Jan. 6th 2001 (and 2005). Remember, this was the guy who was asked by Russert on Jan 7th, 2001 why he didn't support the objection to the unlawful Florida electors by the CBC. His answer: "Nobody asked us."

Aside from the veracity of the statement, his dereliction of his duty to have made an independent judgement about that election theft means that he's clearly a beltway follower, not a leader.

Might be better just to ask him if supporting a primary candidate against Joe Liebermen helps the terrorists.

to be a coward at a time dems needed him most..

I'm with Primative.. Kerry is a career presidential candidate and doesn't deserve another go, period! and I'm certain now he will not even get past the fundraising for the primary...

kerry took a walk on election day, and that single time in history DISQUALIFIES him from running ever again.

Lawyers for the voter's lawsuit in Ohio all KNOW KERRY TOOK A WALK ON AMERICA, by participating minimally in the recount and not at all in the voter's lawsuit. Where did all the money go he promised to fight election fraud? into his campaign re-election coffers....

get out of the race kerry and give the money to Feingold who's not afraid to fight.

if you want to know about the integrity of Kerry, go ask John Edwards.. I've heard the 2 had a fight election night and are pretty much estranged ever since... Edwards wanted to fight, Kerry backed down..

Al Gore, John Kerry, nice guys but we need REAL BACKBONE NEXT TIME THE RETHUGS try to steal our democracy....

i want a fighter... I want Russ Feingold in 2008...

You know you can use thomas.loc.gov to look up the bills he's sponsored and co-sponsored, or search the Congressional Record for his floor statements.

You know you can look at his small biz committee website and read all the stuff he's been doing to bring attention to how this administration is gutting any support for small business:
http://sbc.senate.gov/democrat/

You know you can look at his senate site to see all the other stuff he's doing:
http://kerry.senate.gov/v3/cfm/home.cfm

Okay, maybe you didn't know that. I don't know what idiots you've been listening to with that "he isn't doing his job, he's pandering crap", but maybe you should stop listening to them and take a look at the facts.

Query him this:

During your 2004 presidential campaign you highlighted as one of your actual plans to help the american worker, an initiative to eliminate the tax break american corporations receive for shipping jobs overseas.
As a US Senator why, in the 2 years since, have you not introduced such legislation?

My guess is because he is saving that for the centerpiece of his 2008 campaign.

I have no problem with that question at all. Actually, I thought that he DID either introduce or cosponsor something that included that. I could be wrong though and I'm not going to take the time to go through all the bills.

The only thing I would change is to ask, "in the last 2 years HAVE you introduced such legislation? If so, what can I do to help get it passed? If not, would you please explain why not? What would it take to get you to introduce it?"

I would ask it that way instead of the way you phrased it. I would be similarly respectful if I had the opportunity to ask a question of ANY of our Dem leaders, even those that I wouldn't care to have as the Dem presidential nominee.

And I suspect that, unless you are really obtuse, you would find a respectful way to ask it too. Because your attitude reflects on you, not the person you pose the question to.

Any senator can introduce legislation at any time and they are accommodated. That is how senor Kennedy annually introduces doomed minimum wage increase bills. Minimum wage is nice, but using tax dollars to reward moving production overseas makes peoples blood boil and in this already heated immigration debate climate its a nail in the coffin of the GOP.
Its Kerry's puppy. If he chooses not to use it, then punt it but don't leave it die on the bench.

Bills are shunted to committee and left to die. And there is nothing the Dem can do about it if the Repukes on the committee stick together, because they need a repuke to turn in order to even get a hearing, let alone get it out of committee.

24. I absolutely agree about the RFK Jr. article and ...
would frame the question this way: "In light of a preponderance of evidence indicating that you won Ohio in 2004 and thus the presidency -- most recently documented by Robert Kennedy Jr. in this week's Rolling Stone -- do you regret your decision to concede the election as soon as you did?" If so why? And if not, why not?

Kerry pissed me off then -- early that Wednesday morning in Nov. 2004 -- and all the evidence that people like Mark Crispen Miller and now RFK Jr. keeps me pissed off.

right. Is that what people want? Because that is what happens when you take left voices out of any mix. How far right would DLC be now if Kerry wasn't there pulling left through the last decade?

Maybe more lefties should join and try to influence the outcome. You obviously don't have to vote with their preferred policy, as Kerry's voting record proves. But, you can hear them and try to influence them to hear you and maybe adjust their stance a bit leftward. Seems like it might be helpful.

40. Kerry called for "immediate withdrawal" by May 22!!!
Kerry called for "immediate withdrawal" by May 22 IF the Iraqis did not form "an EFFECTIVE unity government" ...

the date has come and gone and it appears Kerry has deferred to his "plan B" which would mean most troops out of Iraq by 12/31/06 ...

My question is: Can anyone possibly consider the current government to be effective? Has Kerry just drifted back into the vagueries of saying nothing until year end? He's talked about "working out a schedule" with the new government but al Maliki has already been bullied into setting a target date of 12/31/2007!!! (that's 18 months or more away) ...

When can we expect Kerry to renew his call for "immediate withdrawal"??

Great book out on media complicity w swifties.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2006/05/03/eric-boehlerts-lapdogs_n_20318.html

Eric Boehlert's "Lapdogs" On The Swift Boat Hoax: "The Press, Spooked About Being Tagged As Too Liberal, Played Dumb On An Unprecedented Scale"...

<snip>

For several crucial weeks during the campaign, journalists turned away from the pile-up of Swift Boat falsehoods and contradictions, rarely daring to call the Swift Boat attack out for what it really was–a farce. An elaborate, well-choreographed, well-funded farce that not only dragged down the Kerry campaign, but played the press for fools. At every turn, military records proved the Swift Boat veterans to be untruthful. But Beltway reporters and pundits for the most part remained hesitant, too timid to speak up, as they propped up the veterans as serious men. Their conduct during the manufactured Swift Boat scandal, which likely delivered Bush the cushion he needed to win in November, represented an embarrassing new benchmark for campaign season reporting. Rather than uncovering the obvious gaps in the veterans’ wobbly allegations and holding the accusers accountable, the press, spooked about being tagged as too liberal, played dumb on an unprecedented scale, much to the White House’s delight.

By the time the Swift Boat story had played out, CNN, chasing after ratings leader Fox News, found time to mention the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth–hereafter, Swifties–in nearly 300 separate news segments, while more than one hundred New York Times articles and columns made mention of the Swifties. And during one overheated 12-day span in late August, the Washington Post mentioned the Swifties in page-one stories on Aug. 19, 20, 21 (two separate articles), 22, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30, and 31. It was a media monsoon that washed away Kerry’s momentum coming out of the Democratic convention.

Embraced by the Republican’s far right media noise machine, led by Fox News, the Drudge Report, Rush Limbaugh, and the New York Post, the mainstream media refused to stand up to those forces. Instead, the press played along, letting the right wing set the media agenda, and pretending the media’s primary duty was to accurately record the Swifty allegations, call the Kerry camp for comment, and then proclaim the story too tangled to figure out. USA Today, for instance, threw up its hands, declaring, “A clear picture of what John Kerry did or did not do in Vietnam 35 years ago may never emerge, given the fog of war, the passage of time and the intense partisan sentiments of the players.” A headline on Aug. 27 for Hotline, the daily D.C. media tip sheet announced, ” VIETNAM: JUST LIKE THE WAR ITSELF, THIS STORY’S NOW A QUAGMIRE.”

prominent Dem lawmakers did?

Cllinton had more Dem spokespeople defending him from a sex scandal then Kerry could rely on to defend him publicly for his heroic service.

THAT is the problem with the Dem party - and that is how it became a problem for Kerry. NO Dem farm team with any depth of knowledge and toughness to defend current Dems on daily broadcast news shows. They were all schooled in defending Clinton and didn't crap about any other Dem.

Ever notice that Bush didn't defend himself ONCE against charges?

And Kerry came out many times against the swifts - if you checked the Research Forum thread on the swifts you would know that. Or do you believe the media's version?

51. You Really Expect An Honest Answer From Him?
He's a politician. He is not going to tell you anything other than what he Wants to tell you.

And he'll probably just laugh if asked about the 2004 election, and perhaps spew some garbage about how King george beat him fair and square, and that even though there were abnormalities, it wasn't enough to give him a chance at winning.

Do not expect anything approaching a bombshell, or even the remote sign that he might suspect something screwy took place. It's too late for that. And I'm sure he won't tip his hand as to running in '08, but if you doubt he's going to try, then I've got a bridge to sell you.

If I had one thing to say to him, I'd BEG him to retain his senate seat, and put aside any presidential aspirations he may still have. He had his shot, and blew it in a big way, against the WORST president this country has ever seen. I have no desire to give him another chance to screw us again, and end up with another repub for 4 more years. Be a Senator Mr. Kerry, and reflect upon your run for the gold in '04, but never forget that you won....errrrr.....lost.......and we can't afford to have you go back down that road again.

I never said I wanted to be matched up with him in terms of integrity. But I never have, and never will be in a position to run for any office, let alone president. The fact he has more integrity than I do is irrelevant. He doesn't have a chance in '08, and he's just grandstanding, and raising money for his campaign by even wasting our time entertaining the thought. He won't make it past the primaries, and we should focus on winning this time, as opposed to running someone who got clobbered by an Idiot the last.

What Kerry didn't have that Bush DID have was a newsmedia protecting him 24/7, control over 80% of the electronic voting machines, and a RW message machine that bested the weakass Dem spokespeople and weak left media on a daily basis.

And still........ Kerry won. If he hadn't been as solid a candidate as he was, BushInc wouldn't have had to pull out all their other stops, would they?

63. Kerry Won?
In your reply, you stated that Kerry Won.

If that's the case, perhaps someone should tell him. I have no problem with him running for re-election in '08.

Perhaps I'm missing something, but I recall that he conceded the following morning. Right after he decided to give up "having our backs."

Which goes back to my previous question that should be posed to him. Why did he give up? If he lost, and by the mere fact that King george is still in power, then you need to edit your post to indicate that fact.

If he won, and you think he won, then why don't you explain why he should be forgiven for calling it quits, when he knew that FRAUD had been committed against him, and the country he supposedly loves, and wanted to run.

He's either a winner who is a coward, or he's a loser. You can't have it both ways. And that's why I have so little respect for the guy. If he won, he should have stood his ground, and regardless of your arguments with me, he did not. He went back to his day job, and quit on his supporters after the fact. That's not the kind of guy I want to give another chance to, so I can be calling him a coward again in 2009.

I don't think Kerry trusts their conclusions at this point. I know he doesn't. His top investigator for BCCI believes in machine fraud - that tells me that Kerry does, too.

97. I suggest the same could be said of
Hillary, Gore, Clark, Biden, Dodd, Feingold, Warner, Bayh, Vilsack and Edwards. What are any of these people doing. I know that Hillary has a bill that the Senate hasn't taken action on (Kerry is a co-sponsor.) Kerry also is a co-sponsor on an Obama bill. Kerry has also spoken about voting problems more than any of these people. In 2004, the work would have had to begin before April 2004 - what were all the other possible candidates doing about the issue. (and as it now appears you think it uniquely Kerry's job, I guess it was Gore's job in 2004.)

It seems to me that the responsible people on this issue have to be the DNC and the state parties. Dean has been working on this.

Tell him it'll be freshwater fishing on the St Lawrence Seaway. The only rules I have are 1) He can't tell anyone about my secret hot spots. 2) We release anything we catch 3) We don't drink the first beer until one of us lands a decent walleye, bass, or pike.

Seriously, though, good luck. Let us know how you make out.
