How can you be remorseful when you won't admit to doing anything wrong? If somebody can explain this to me, please do.

Former Enron executive gets 24 years in prison (Roundup)

Washington - Sending a strong signal to the corporate community, a federal judge convicted former Enron Corp Chief Executive Officer Jeffrey Skilling to more than 24 years in prison on Monday for his role in an accounting fraud that brought down the company.

US District Court Judge Sim Lake sentenced Skilling in a Houston, Texas courtroom after hearing testimony from several victims in the case. Skilling was convicted in May on 19 counts of fraud, conspiracy and insider trading at the energy-trading firm.

'In terms of remorse your honour, I can't imagine more remorse,' Bloomberg financial news service quoted Skilling as telling the judge at the hearing. 'That being said your honour, I am innocent of these charges. I am innocent of every one of these charges.'

Skilling's lawyers had said a long sentence would be like sending their client to life in prison, but Lake dismissed their argument.

'As the many victims of his crime have so poignantly explained, his crimes have imposed on them a life sentence of poverty,' he said.

not because he has ruined anyone else's life. That would require empathy and acknowledgment of responsibility. Of course he doesn't think he did anything wrong. He was entitled to all that money, don't you know? Poor guy. :nopity:

poor baby - so if he comes out of jail as a decrepit and old man who cares? Since when is that an excuse for preferential treatment?At least hell be able to retire on his illicit stash of money which, i am sure, is safely put away in switzerland, Uruguay or the bahamas, which is more than can be said for the poor bastards who worked at enron for years and have only poverty to show for it. Its wishful thinking but i like to think that Skilling will be sent to a real penitentiary (leavenworth, san quentin) and put in a cell with Bubba who hasnt seen some nice white and new ass for a long time.

4. Total narcissism.

His statements fit with someone who has a disproportionate sense of entitlement. Obviously, Skilling is planning to appeal the convictions. He has a right to pursue an appeal, and of course he doesn't want to say something in his sentencing allocution that might damage any later proceedings. Even so, his expensive lawyers should have run him through some statements that would make him appear less callow. Or maybe they did, and he just could not bring himself to say anything that would damage his perception of himself.

Hard to believe such a thing could happen in a Texas courtroom, where convictions have been upheld through sleeping lawyers, bribed judges, collusion between the prosecution and defense and other legal shenanigans.

Of course, with no more money, I don't suppose those high-priced lawyers in their tailored suits will be representing Mr. Skilling anymore. Which public defender will draw his name out of the appeal pile?
