Neither one of these guys has entered the race yet, but both are probably the most popular "potential" candidates on this forum.

If you could wave a magic wand and make one of these DU favorites your president, which one would you pick?

I'm not taking anything away from Al Gore, one of my favorite environmentalists ever, but there's something about Clark that every single time I see or hear him, he just makes me feel good.

As for this poll, it's pretty much just a curiosity on my part to see if there was an overall preference, considering how popular both of these people are on this forum.

I couldn't agree with you more. Take Al Gore for example. As much as I love him and would love it if he were President, I don't for a second think he'd have the same chance of winning in "reality" as he would here on this forum...and that includes both the primaries and the general election. Most people here seem to think that Gore would easily knock off Clinton, Edwards, or Obama in the primaries and then run away with the general election. While I think he COULD win the primary, I don't think it would be easy, and in the general election, I don't think he'd have nearly the chance of winning as what's given to him here on DU. Personally, I think Obama would have a better chance in the general election than Gore would, but I'm sure I'd be in the vast minority on DU about that one.

I think you are underestimating the appeal and efficacy of a Gore candidacy. While I am more than happy to jump onboard the O train if Gore doesn't run, I'm holding out a bit longer. I think Gore would kick some serious ass not only the primary by uniting the party, but his new-found confidence and gravitas will jettison him across the finish line in the general in a karmic sweet victory.

And FTR a Gore/Obama ticket would be sublime.

I'm not saying he wouldn't have a good chance of winning, just saying I don't think that winning for him would be all that much easier for him than for any of our other major candidates. Easier, maybe, maybe a little. Much easier, no.

47. One doesn't have to be "detached" from reality to think

either one of those men are better than the current crop - which they are. Integrity, good politics AND the ability to win a general election (because either could get some Southern and mid-Western white male votes).

General Clark has been discussing how the Bush administration screwed up with the war in Iraq for years. He's been..

---and traveling across the nation to ensure Democrats get elected so we can do something about it.

And poll after poll on DU, General Clark came out on top.

and please don't think at least some of us die hard Gore fans aren't aware of his former political proclivities and ideology. However, and this is the money point, he has evolved. That is the most brilliant aspect of being human - to be able to evolve in our way of thinking; it is a sign of intelligence and flexibility. Gore now appears to bridge the ideological divides in the party like no other candidate.

Al Gore has a great track record on many issues but this is a permanent stain on his career, imo.

Gore was the VP candidate. Perot was the Presidential candidate. Perot would likely have debated Clinton, not Gore.

53. It was AFTER the election, Perot was there to defend American jobs

and VP Gore, to his discredit, was there to shill for cheap labor. Somewhere around 93-94, it was a major debate and broadcast on TV. I remember paying very close attention because I had just learned about Bush trying the same thing a few years before called MAI (Multilateral Agreements on Investment).

He was close to influencing Dems in the senate to vote No (not the IWR sponsors, mind you, but some more less opportunistic dems). That's when Gephardt & Joementum undercut the debate by appearing with W in the Rose Garden "Of course you can have your war, your Majesty".
I also admire Gore - not for the limelight, but because unlike candidates that put their personal comfort above voters rights, he stuck his neck out as far as he could to fight for his win. At least the whole countru knows * was NOT elected in 2000 - thanks to Al Gore!

Gore has made many powerful speeches on all manner of topic since 2000. In each he was very bold, completely fearless and very plain spoken. Point after point that nobody else of his stature would dare speak aloud.

Not sure where you've been but many of us have caught these speeches over these 6+ years, posted about them, linked to web-casts and celebrated the brilliance of them right here on DU. Long, long before Inconvenient Truth came out.
