This 30-second advertisement from Gen. Wesley K. Clark began running yesterday in New Hampshire and will start soon in South Carolina, Oklahoma and Arizona. It is the first commercial of the Democratic presidential primary campaign to use the image of Bill Clinton.

A pretty inconsequential little article about the ad that's created a bit of an uproar on the mass media circuits.

3. I believe Clinton approved the use of his likeness in the ad

I don't believe it's kosher for a former president to endorse one of his party's candidates until a nominee has already been chosen. still, he can hint at it all he wants, within certain bounds.

in any case, this wasn't supposed to be a contentious thread! nor was it supposed to sway the reader's vote in any candidate's favor!

Look, if I had video of Clinton hanging a Presidential Medal of Freedom around my neck, you better god damn believe I'd use it.

This is gonna surely get me a nastygram from the mods, but, people like you and Scott Lee below are the reason I was telling my wife last night that I hardly ever go to DU anymore. The ad is really nice. It looks good. Nowhere in it does Clark imply that he was endorsed by Clinton. He simply shows a clip of him receiving the highest civilian honor our country can bestow upon a person. So, why not just let people who like Clark use this thread to talk about it? Sure would be nice. Don't give me this bullshit about Clark supporters doing the same thing in Dean threads, because you'd just be talking to a brick wall there. I HAVE NOT and WILL NOT ever do that because it's childish and stupid and would reflect poorly on my candidate. Exactly as you have done.

That everyone doesn't agree with your rosy view that your candidate is playing fair by implying an endorsement when he doesn't have one?

Your challenge for the day: open your mind to other points of view, and try to resist the temptation to label those who disagree with thinly-veiled insults ('childish and stupid').

I have no problem discussing these things...none whatsoever, but don't use a positive candidate thread to start this bullshit. If you wanna get into it, start your own thread for it.

As I stated earlier, there is no endorsement implication. Have you watched the ad? It says he was decorated, blah blah blah...NOTHING about an endorsement, just video of Clinton doing the decorating. For god's sake quit making shit up, or at least start your own thread to do it!

11. Not relieved, retired

Clark was sandbagged by enemies in the administration, just the same way office politics is played in corporations all over the world every day of the week. He went over his bosses' heads one time too many and he got screwed as a result. The only surprise is that he was surprised when it happened.

I was in a room once when my employer and my supervisor had a screaming match over a job we were doing (I worked in construction). When it was over and I left the room I turned to another man who had witnessed the dispute and told him to keep his tools close.

I knew that the boss and the foreman would come to an agreement, but neither man wanted someone around who had witnessed the fight. Sure enough, within two days both of us innocent bystanders were gone.

This is run-of-the-mill, dime-a-dozen office politics. If anything, the story would generate a knowing smile from anyone who has any clue how things really work in the real world.

But my boss didn't bring me back in a few months later to hang a medal around my neck like Clinton did Clark.

Sure, the ad doesn't show an "endorsement" but to anyone with any understanding of how politics works in this country, it says just what it's intended to.

him being given a medal by President Clinton, doesn't imply an endorsement. YOU are assuming that. "Playing Fair?" Should we discuss the Al Gore endorsement before ANY votes were cast? Should we discuss the fact that Gore told supporters of other candidates to support Dean before one vote has been cast? Should we discuss Gore telling Dean supporters to donate more money because the man he endorsed has a habit of sticking his foot in his mouth? Give me a break. Playing fair. hahahaha! funny!

That commercial didn't say a damn thing about an endorsement. I understand your fear though because IF Clinton does endorse Clark...it will be MAJOR news and the media will be talking about Clark for a change instead of 24/7 Howard.

At least Clinton is waiting until the American people have voted. :eyes:
