| The sexism in this country |
|
Edited on Sat Mar-01-08 10:19 AM by journalist3072
I was listening to Tom Joyner's show the other day, and some guy (an Obama supporter) calls in and asks Tom Joyner what was up with the outfit Sen. Clinton had on at the debate the other night.
Tom Joyner concurred, and said something like "You don't wear brown when you're getting the life beat out of you by the Black candidate" (paraphrasing..but that's pretty much what he said).
I was just really disgusted by the comments and ending up turning off Tom Joyner's show.
And I thought: why is Tom Joyner discussing her clothes? This was just a few days after her appearance at the State of the Black Union, which Tom Joyner attended, as he always does. I would have thought Tom Joyner should have been talking about Sen. Clinton's plans for HBCUs. Tom Joyner is very passionate about HBCUs, and Sen. Clinton has called for increased funding for them.
It was a tremendous disappointment for me to hear them discussing her clothes, of all things.
And I think it speaks volumes about the sexism in this country.
Tom Joyner's show has become a bastion of Hillary Clinton hatred. This guy named "Huggie Lowdown" who comes on Tom Joyner's show every day to do entertainment news, had Bill and Hillary Clinton as contenders for "Bamma's of the Week" yesterday.
It's really sad to see Tom and his crew stoop so low.

| 1. Remember 2000 and Gore's Brown Suit? |

This kind of silliness isn't limited to Hillary.

| 4. Did Joyner initiate the exchange? |
|
He took a call about her clothes. While I agree that's not really important, that's the nature of talk radio. They talk about anything and everything, and don't pause often enough for reflection. While the phrase "getting the life beat out of you by the black candidate" is unfortunate, it's more a reflection of the violence inherent in the system than it is of sexism. If someone had said this about two male candidates, would it be sexist?
That being said, Joyner's comment does not appear to even make sense.

| 6. In my opinion, he should have stopped the caller |
|
I think a more appropriate response on Tom Joyner's part, would have been if he had said something to the effect of 'Well you know, we've got issues in Black America. We've got people affected by the housing crisis. We still have people living in toxic FEMA trailers. We've got an African-American unemployment rate that is nearly twice that of the national average. And so we don't have time to be talking about a candidate's clothes. What we need to be discussing, is where that candidate stands on the issues.'
That, I believe, would have been an appropriate response to the caller. Instead, he did just the opposite---basically concurring with the caller about Sen. Clinton's clothes, and then his comment about not wearing brown when you're getting the crap beat out of you by the Black candidate.
I'm truly disappointed with the way Tom Joyner has handled this election. He's done nothing to help educate his listeners.
Every time he's had Barack Obama on his show, he's never engaged him in a policy discussion. It's mostly lighthearted "How's Michelle and the kids" and stuff like that.
However, the few times he's had Sen. Clinton on his show this campaign season, he has been much tougher on her, asking her why wasn't she offering free health care. And when he had both Sen. Clinton and Rep. Kendrid Meek of Florida on at the same time (Meek had come on there to endorse Clinton), Tom Joyner asked Meek "There's a pefectly qualified Black man running for President. Why aren't you supporting Sen. Obama?"
I thought that was disrespectful to both Sen. Clinton and Rep. Meek.
