"President Bush stands on the side of doctors and patients," the first lady told the audience of about 250 doctors and medical workers, in a speech that focused on medical liability reform, touched on stem cell research and heart disease, and lauded her husband's work at home and abroad.

Although she avoided direct comment about Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry, she took a subtle jab at vice presidential candidate John Edwards, a trial lawyer, when calling for medical liability reform.

She does know, however, that the goal of big business goal is no lawsuits, period--and that these people are the main financiers of the Republican party.

This goes for the doctors as well, who still, in many cases, refuse to police themselves and weed out the small number among them responsible for the vast majority of malpractice lawsuits. That said, I think we can agree that "frivolous" lawsuits are not a good thing for anyone.

Doctors' liability rates were raised for this reason and because the greedy insurance companies needed to recoup their losses due to the recent stock market bubble bursting.

The GOP is more than disingenuous in their repeated flogging of this basically nonexistent problem.

is because of incompetent doctors and good doctors refusing to kick these incompetent doctors out of the profession. Did you know that until recently, doctors who lost their license in one state could just move to another and set up shop there? Thankfully they cannot do this anymore, with states sharing their registries, but the medical malpractice problem is overstated. I also believe that a big reason for the rate increases from medical malpractice insurers is the bear market and the said decreases in value that have been a result of this bear market.
