| Do you think Georgia can be competitive? |
|
I know you will think I am nuts for even suggesting so but I read something interesting on another board. I don't know if the second part of what I read is true but here it is:
Part 1 - The 04/08 Strategic Vision poll shows Bush'Cheney leading Kerry/Edwards by 52% to 43%.
Part 2 - The poll was based on the assumption that only 18% of African-American voters will turn out. Someone at the local Dem party re-weighted the poll with a 20.5 African-American turnout and the results were 49.5 for Bush and 45.5 for Kerry.
This as I said I read on another board, so I don't know if it is true or not.
What are your thoughts about it?

With all due respect to the good people of Georgia to include my uncle and aunt...that state can suck a fat tit off the Bush pig....That is Confederate Flag Country and will safely be in the Bush column.
This idea of taking states like Texas, Georgia and others like that confounds me...Some of the people on DU must have a different take than I do.
I think the South is generally a waste, HOWEVER, I have a good feeling about Tennessee and Arkansas, but states like GA, SC, Alabama and Mississipi are off the map as far as Im concerned.

...that I have to agree with you. GA and NC are longshots, but TN and AR are looking better. One poll has Kerry up by 7% in Florida. But SC, AL, MS, LA and VA are beyond hope. The bad news for us here is that 5 of these states have open seats that were held by Democrats. I'll be very surprised if we can hold onto Fritz Hollings seat here in SC.

but I offer up the fact that Georgia is dead last in education. I firmly believe that if the state of education wasn't in a shambles and if people cared more about children/young adults actually learning than they do about when football starts, things might not be so bad here.
I am very active in politics in the metro Atlanta area and I really do feel that if we could somehow just motivate people to just go vote, it would be much closer than the polls now suggest. I am struck by something a political science professor told me once. She said that if a Democrat becomes disillusioned or is busy, they just won't vote, but a Republican will get off their deathbed to go vote. We must change this.
Looking over this now, I'm not sure I have a point, but I offer my mindless ramblings....now I'm off to vote in our runoff.

The reason the Republicans get off their death bed to vote is because they are aligned behind a focused ideology.
Hateful as it may be, it’s hard to be a “passionate” Democrat when all your candidates are running to the center and we are trying to “out jingo” the opposition.
We got beat in 2002 because our candidates ran TO BUSH, not from him. The dirty shitball politics that Cleland had landed on him notwithstanding.

Im from North Carolina, live in Virginia so I know the gig around here as well.
I think we keep Edwards' seat as Bowles is tracking well ahead right now. The Repukes aren't out of it, but it's looking good for us.
I think GA and SC will be moving to the Republicans this go around, BUT we pickup Illinois (now that Captain Crazy is on the ticket) and have a better than solid shot at Alaska. I am now eyeing the Colorado seat as a potential pickup. Salazar is popular and has state appeal. The Repukes are throwing mud at each other and have Mr. Beerman running against a Religious Right tool. Not sure how I want that to go...I think the cokier the Republican the better our chances.
I'd be shocked if we do anything more than stay even in the Senate. Too many Conservative States (GA, SC, CO) are on the docket.

| 5. Sigh. Alabama is a bastion of conservatives |
|
Look at our flag. We wanted to have the closest thing to the Confederate battle flag as we could.
Bama will go to Bush, as will Georgia, South Carolina and Mississippi.
They will play to the fear and win. It happens all the time.

A nine-point lead by a GOP firm is encouraging. I don't think it is likely, but if a strong AA vote does materialize--we could make it a contest.

Not winnable but making it a contest. Meaning Bush will have to spend money and make campaign stops in the state.
Every dollar spent in Georgia is a dollar less spent in Ohio or Missouri.
Every campaign stop by bush in Georgia means one less stop in Florida or Iowa.

but why do we have to take one for the team?
I really don't want to have to beat my television to death seeing all those Bush ads (actually I have one of those little guns that shoot suction cup darts. Quite cathartic really to just unload on those psychos).

| 15. THIS RIGHT HERE is the best argument |
|
Ps1074 nails it on the head.
While I maintain Kerry has no shot in some of these states, if we make it “interesting”, then it may force the Dumbya Dance to Texas-Two step right into their strongholds dedicating resources and time to go and throw red meat to the base.
Yes, it’s a good move and it is why I am fully in support of Kerry campaigning in Republican strong-holds. Who knows? Maybe those “strong holds” are starting to crack a bit. If that’s the case, then it will be exposed in November.
If we can get over 45% of the vote in these “right wing” states then it may very well signal a “shift” away from politics of right wing hate and toward pragmatic approaches, thus more Liberal, to government.
That is why while I DO NOT believe we have a snowballs chance in hell of taking SC, GA, MIS, ALA, VA, NC…if we can get over 45% that means 2008 those states are on the table and we could be in the midst of a Democratic rebirth…However, we must have our platform strong and we must “deal with” cultural issues without kowtowing to the radical right.
Otherwise, I will be looking at the race in Georgia with an eye on the future of America. If we go down there and track 38% then this nation is likely to remain evenly split for the foreseeable future.

but how many of you live in Georgia? If you've ever driven around and seen the sheer number of thiose goddamn Bush/Cheney bumper stickers then you would realize why every penny spent in this state is an absolute waste.

| 9. I did a little polling myself yesterday |
|
As I was driving to work, just as I got in the highway (I-20), I was cutoff by an idiot with a W and Bush/Cheney sticker. I decided I was going to count how many I saw on my way into downtown (from Covington). I only saw 2 Bush/Cheney and counting my car, there were 2 Kerry ones. Not bad.
I think numbers would improve here, not just for Kerry but from the top down if they would just put a tiny bit of effort into getting Dems elected in this state. The Democratic Party used to be able to count on Georgia going solid Dem. Now that things have started to turn the other way, the national party is cutting and running.
We don't appreciate being taken for granted down here. No one does anywhere. Show us we matter and you'll get some results.
End of whiny rant.

In the lastest issue of The Nation, there's a great article about Georgia's voting machines. Sorry, no link. Was flipping through my copy only a few minutes ago. I'll look for it.
