A television ad attacking Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry's record in the Vietnam War has touched off a political firefight.
In response, Kerry spokeswoman Tara McGuinness said Kerry had later amended his speech to say that on the Christmas Eve in question, he had been near Cambodia but not in Cambodia.
And she cited a statement by one of Kerry's advisers, Michael Meehan Sr., who said that Kerry "on one occasion crossed into Cambodia at the request of members of a special operations group. ... Boats often received fire from enemy taking sanctuary across the border. Kerry's was not the only United States riverboat to respond."
