http://www.delawareonline.com/newsjournal/opinion/view/08232004a.htmlBush should denounce untruths in Swift boat adsThere is nothing honorable about the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth. The group is impugning the integrity of Sen. John Kerry, the Democratic presidential candidate, with well-funded advertising that twists truth with slander and innuendo.
All credible investigations of the allegations that Sen. Kerry lied about exploits that won him medals in Vietnam show that these disgruntled conservatives are conducting a sleazy smear campaign. Their campaign is being advised and paid for by people connected to the Bush family in Texas and to Karl Rove, President Bush's political aide.
None of the accusers actually served on the same boat that Mr. Kerry commanded on the Mekong River 35 years ago, although they claim to have "served with John Kerry." <<<more>>>
One Delawarean in the group, George Elliot of Lewes, was Mr. Kerry's commanding officer in Vietnam.
According to a report in the New York Times, naval records show that in 1969 Mr. Elliott wrote in John Kerry's fitness report: "In a combat environment often requiring independent decisive action Lt. j.g. Kerry was unsurpassed."
Eight years ago at a news conference Mr. Elliott said of John Kerry: "The fact that he chased an armed enemy down is not something to be looked down upon, but it was an act of courage. And the whole outfit served with honor."
Now, as a member of the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, Mr. Elliott says: "John Kerry has not been honest about what happened in Vietnam."
Why did Mr. Elliott change his tune? Which of his statements are true and which are not? He won't say. <<<<more>>>>
Another Delawarean in the Swift boat group, Robert G. Elder of Greenville, stands by his statements and says John Kerry "betrayed us when he came home and went in front of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee."
I'm embarassed that I share this great state of Delaware with these 2 assholes. They are not only an embarassment to the First State but to all those who served in Vietnam!
