2. Yeah, I Saw It!
It was in the same Dumpster with The Swift Boat Veterans For Truth's book, "Honesty". And Zell Miller's book, "Loyalty". And Bob Dole's book, "Integrity".

4. A Contrary Opinion
I like McCain. I mean I know he's a republican, and certainly I don't agree with many of his proposals or plans. His willingness to stand with President BUsh also angers me. All that aside, however, and I do think he is an example of the type of Republican I'd like to see.

Let's face it we are always going to have Republicans/Conservatives and we are always going to have Democrats/Liberals. I'd rather have a guy like John McCain across the aisle than the bastard offspring of Ann Coulter and Karl Rove, politicians without principle or a sense of reality.

5. IMO, it SEEMS like that should be the case because he somehow
Edited on Thu Aug-26-04 02:06 PM by FoeOfBush
appeals to independents, and in that vein probably appeals in part to the independent streak in dems. Therein lies the problem, he is much MORE dangerous because of that appeal. He can deflect and defer things to a degree from both sides and in the end he still leans to the right which is a net loss for us of the kind of people that absent McCain could be inclined to see our side.

EDIT (Forgot to finish thought)

A more highly partisan repuke is more easily outed as a creep in wolf's clothing.

Again, JMO.

9. Yeah, but by this kind of logic
You could also say any centrist/moderate Democrat fits a similar mode. I mean they do at times side with the right wing.

I think it depends on whether or not you think his centrism/rationalism is real or if it is just a ploy. I believe, based on what I've seen of the man, that it's real.

11. Centrist/moderate mode is close, but can you name a centrist/moderate
DEM that also pulls independent and independent-minded-leaning republicans just by virtue of adding their name to something?

12. Well You mean
A Democrat who would influence Conservative Moderates and Independent Conservatives to support something liberal? Joe Lieberman springs to mind.

15. Not quite. Joe doesn't quite have the cred with repukes that McCain
has with dems.

It's like this;
McCain IS a right-leaning repuke
McCain IS perceived as a "maverick" or independent
McCain IS respected in/by/some democrats

All those factors make him much more dangerous than someone that only has the first tenet going for him/her. And, I can think of no one on our side that fits the reverse.

6. "Why is Chelsea Clinton so ugly?"
"Because Janet Reno is her real father!" - John McCain, speaking at a Republican fundraiser.

7. Better than Rove or Coulter. High praise.
Fact is, McCain signed on with the disgusting Bush chickenhawk smears. That doesn't make him as bad, but bad.

10. McCain has a couple of skeletons in his closet, too.
He skated on the Arizona savings and loan scandals in the eighties because of a slick lawyer.

We Dems are quick to rag on Neil Bush for his role in those S&L deals, but we give a pass to McCain. Why?

And . . . remember how the Pukes made Dukakis seem like an unfeeling wretch because he didn't say he'd go after anybody who raped his wife (thanks CNN)?

Well, a couple of months ago, McCain's wife had a stroke. Seems like he was on the campaign trail the next day. Bad guys could make a lot out of that.

13. My feeling on McCain is.......
he mostly looked good compared to other republicans. We are so used to being whipped, lied to, smeared or ignored that a simple statement of decency or a simple acknowledgment of reality makes him Republican Statesman. McCain says stop telling lies about veterans, what courage, wow wow wow! So he meets the standard that most politicians could meet just a few years ago, and is only special because Bush and company won't even try. But he is still a very conservative, very republican guy.
