Those voting chose a poodle. Have had one, would not have been my choice for children. Loved the dog but the only one I had the bit people.

Wait till you see the dog the girls picked out. So cute.

1. I hope they get the beagle...
The girls obviously like it better! :)

Plus beagles are way nicer dogs than poodles.

4. I've never had a beagle
but I love the look of them. they are supposedly barkers, so I don't know how that would go over. But my lab mix is a big barker, drives me crazy sometimes, but crack up when she throws a ball and barks for me to go get it. That ain't happening. (and yes I know ain't is not a word although it is in the dictionary and it is in the saying.)

10. I ain't got a problem with you using that word...
I'm from Texas after all. :)

I had a friend who had a beagle named Jack and that old dog was hilarious. He was quite a bit overweight so it was always funny to watch him trying to chase cars as they drove by.

14. We were just country folks around here
even if we did live in towns. I had a english teacher in Junior High that would have fits about our use of the word. "Ain't is not a word." she would complain to us. And of course more than once one of us would answer her back with. "Ain't ain't a word?" She was out matched but she fought on. Finally one day, the smart aleck I was, I got the class dictionary and asked her if it was not a word then why would it be in there with a definition. She just shook her head and told us for that year 'ain't' was a word, but only for our class. We were not allowed to tell the other classes. Poor old lady. She was probably younger than I am now, but she sure seemed old at the time, and we probably made her feel that way too.

But the "ain't ain't a word' has stuck with me all these years.

3. I've had several Standard Poodles
they require lots of grooming because of their hair. I don't think that's a good choice for a busy family.

5. I agree.
The poodle I had was very intelligent, but a bit too much. You would tell her to go get someone and she would go get them. She would also refuse to eat unless you fed her with an eating utensil. Come to think of it, when my lab got real sick, she did too. Maybe I just give in too much to my dogs/kids sometimes.

9. We had a miniature poodle when I was a kid.
We kept him in a puppy cut and with a small bit of brushing he was just fine. Groomed every six weeks.

Nothing like or Himalayan we have now. If we don't keep him in a lion cut or comb out *all* of his fur daily (it's hard to get to his belly, he's not all that fond of that area being brushed), he gets such horrible mats we have to shave him. (Most recent time we had to shave him was when he was in the hospital -- the vets were much more concerned with, you know, making sure he could pee -- the reason he was in there was he couldn't, had a stone blocking him up.)

6. They are not poodle people
I just don't see it. A beagle isn't hypoallergenic. I'd steer them toward a Border Terrier if I were able to. Link on the breed: http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/borderterrier.htm

8. no Sheltie?
A Shetland Sheepdog would have been perfect. Such a sweet and lovable dog this breed is. Too bad they couldn't have picked the dog out themselves. A poodle huh? Oh well ... ;)

11. they will pick the dog out themselves
This is just one of those dumb surveys to determine what someone else thinks they should get. I can't see them with a poodle myself. Nothing against poodles, but it is not a good dog usually for small mischievous children, too temperamental in my opinion but I am not an expert on it.

15. My suggestion is that they hold off until after the election. A new
puppy in the house has the potential to significantly break up the family routine. As the owner of a new "holy terrier" , I speak from experience.

19. I'd agree except for the older girl's allergies
Edited on Fri Aug-29-08 01:33 PM by goodgd_yall
You can't guarantee the dog would be hypoallergenic, which I hear is what they are looking for. As I posted upthread, I think a Border Terrier would suit them just fine.

Here's a link that lists what breeds are hypoallergenic: http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/allergy.htm

17. Better yet
Avoid the AKC like the plague because of what they have become, and instead, get a FCI registered dog where the Germans and other Europeans value things like intelligence, trainability, and the ability to perform the task for which they were bred, instead of our bubble-headed beauties promoted by the AKC.
