Are we all in a bubble here...?
Edited on Tue Sep-02-08 03:13 AM by regnaD kciN
Because all I see, anywhere I turn in the progressive blogosphere, is that Palin is in trouble, the Republicans are abandoning her like rats fleeing the sinking ship, that McCain may have to ask her to withdraw, etc., etc.

Then I look at the Corporate Media (yes, I know, but they are where most people get their news), and all I read is about how the Republicans are "rallying around" Palin and showing "strong, enthusiastic support" for McCain's pick.

So, I have to wonder: are we here on the left, at DU, DailyKos, MyDD, OpenLeft, TalkingPointsMemo, and so on, simply in an echo-chamber-like bubble where we only reinforce our own wishful thinking? Can the Corporate Media be considered, instead, the group in the bubble (even though their version of reality is what will be swallowed whole by the vast majority of the American electorate)? Or is the Republican "strong, enthusiastic support" similar to the "vote of confidence" the owner of a struggling sports franchise gives his coach/manager just before canning his sorry ass?

As they used to say in the Comedy Central ads, "I don't know...I'm askin'"

5. The "tone" I'm mentioning...
...is as of the 11 P.M. newscasts and the early-posted web stories of what will be in tomorrow's local newspapers. Maybe the tone is starting to change in NYC and DC, but it still hasn't percolated out here to Seattle.

And we are about to find out which is stronger, the bloggers or the traditional media.

6. yep.. Kyra was BREATHLESS to learn about Todd's emails & phone calls
WE talked about it TWO days ago..and she just "discovered" it..

we are ahead of the curve..

Without the invsetgating WE all did, the media would still be showering her with rose petals and naming her Mom of the Century..and clucking about her "wonderful story"

3. I think so. Especially since the media is in the tank for Mac...
For the most part anyway.

But the blogs do make a difference, and WHERE people go for news is slowly changing.

7. ABC News is reporting Palin's Alaska Secession ties
You're not in a bubble.

This thing has gotten real bad for McCain in the media.

American SPectator is claiming that Romney has a hand in dishing the dirt on here. Supposedly he's extremely pissed about this.

8. This, I think was a plan all along to get the independent women vote...
Edited on Tue Sep-02-08 03:20 AM by ALiberalSailor
...put her out there, get her attacked, rally around her, and get sympathy. Brilliant actually.

If that was the plan...

...they'd surely find a better way to "get her attacked" that would resonate with the experiences of independent women. The way it's happening now, she's getting attacked because she comes off looking like an utter nutcase.

9. Good question....
I guess it really doesn't matter who's "in the bubble" as long as the Republicans
react the way they did today.

Apparently, they believe that more people listen to us that the MSM, or at least
enough to hurt them....that's all that matters to me.

11. We'll never be as glib and accommodating as the mainstream media
and they'll never be as left as us. This may be a thing decided in barber shops and beauty parlors and employee lounges in Omaha and Orlando and Yuma.

Palin is agreeable to a lot of fundies in GOP Land but maybe not to all of them. They have to be a little uneasy about the secessionist impulse and the "family values" difficulties. The fundies wanted a fundie-friendly nominee but at least some of them must be saying over supper tables, "Well, I wish he'd picked someone else."

I have no idea what you mean by the "General Electorate's leaning and views". I thought we were discussing media.

same that ends up being the top in the MSM world. One thing is for certain it is definitely Palin .. jsut what stories hasnt solidified on DU since there are so many different ones.

15. yes, is the answer
to win, you have to see things the way rethugs see them

of course dems know Palin is pathetic

but rethugs are ecstatic with Palin

all the gun toters, anti-abortionist, global warming deniers, creationists, and assorted war mongers are simply delighted

to win, you have to understand the electorate, not other du-ers

18. To a degree here and maybe in real life for some
but the ship is taking on water. There are a lot of holes.

This unending drama is having an effect. I'm not saying they drop her but the luster is coming off fast. There will be staunch Republicans that will not in the vote for her. The fringes are pleased but this is not a candidate that can be on a national ticket. If she was a he then it would already be over for her and McCain and it may and should be anyway.

there's only so far they can go to cheerlead for an imcompetent fanatic.

That and the fact that, no matter how hard they try, they can't resist lurid sex angles and scandal.

Issues- they can and WILL ignore and suppress until the cows come home.

Just wanted to say, excellent post.

Nicely written at a variety of levels.

I love your assessment, "There's only so far they can go to cheerlead for an incompetent fanatic."

Very tasty and totally right on.
