ST. PAUL — President Bush plans to promote Senator John McCain’s ability to be commander in chief and his defense of the war in Iraq in the video address he will give to the Republican National Convention tonight.
In the brief remarks, which amount to a little less than eight minutes, Mr. Bush reminds the delegates of Mr. McCain’s staunch support for the war in Iraq — a position that remains unpopular among a majority of Americans and one that has contributed to the president’s extremely low approval ratings.
The White House has released these excerpts of Mr. Bush’s talk, which is to be broadcast on television at 9:50 p.m. Eastern time:
“We live in a dangerous world. And we need a president who understands the lessons of September 11, 2001: that to protect America, we must stay on the offense, stop attacks before they happen, and not wait to be hit again. The man we need is John McCain.”
