Impressions on Chimpy in Wheeling, West Virginia on CSPAN

Bad country western song with lyrics like "I don't need college" to whooping hollers. Then comes on Chimpy and the crowd goes nuts. A Democrat introduces the President to confused boos. The guy says something about his brothers in unions to more confused boos.

Rick Casini (I'm watching this on the web) goes into some confusing thing about steel union contracts. Of course, no mention that the steel industry has to buy imported Chinese steel.

Something about tax cuts for the entire West Virginia population. The guy introduces him as the "man of steel". Wow. Imaginative.

Bush goes into a fake-Texas accent. His schtick is predictable smoky-room KKK meetin' politics.

The crowd screams "USA! USA! USA!" after some Chimpy jingoistic throwaway line. And fishin'n' huntin'. Not bad for a guy from blueblood New England.

He wavers a tad on his fake Southern accent. He does say "hundered" instead of hundred. He then goes into his classic fuckhead laugh with the hunting thing into "hunting for votes". Then his laugh. Must turn channel......no...no....

He mentions "Hollywood", an old standby to get boos from rednecks who probably just had gone to the mall to see a film they loved that was made in Hollywood.

He talks about Laura and how she's gonna write the speech. Make it good, honey.

Bush continues with how Cheney "was not chosen for his pretty face"...still in a fake southern accent.

I get bored. Sorry. Bush is very boring and it is tedious hearing him go through a speech he didn't write.

My attention comes back when he scampers through his healthcare issues and the crowd cheers without having any idea what he is talking about.

He goes on about farmers and workers and child credits and the marriage penalty. He gets a big hoot when he says he wants to encourage marriage, not hinder it.

On and on he goes. They cheer. He lies. They cheer. No protestors. After signing the agreement that they would suck Chimpy's tiny penis if asked, they made it in the hall. Suckers.

All I can say is how can people be SO STUPID.

the few times I've heard this dope speak (to like-minded dopes) he brings up the "hollywood heart & soul of America" thing and then finishes with "I believe the heart and soul of America is _______ (whatever city he's in today)" I keep watching because I'm almost positive he'll say the wrong place one day. Then he talks about Cheney's looks, and how awesome Laura is. I think he's been told to stick to the script, so he won't get himself in trouble. I can't wait for the debates!

a lot of steelworkers that will vote for Bush. Neither the United Steelworkers of America (USWA) or the Independent Steelworkers Union (ISU) support Bush. All union members don't vote Democrat just like all southerners don't vote Republican.

16. I only saw a little of it (clicking past it),

so I appreciated your take on it. But what bothered me was the HUGE hall they were in, and it was packed with people. Usually, it seems as if the crowds are smaller or, at least, the camera doesn't pan over the people so I assume there aren't masses of people. Or he gets a captive audience at some military base. But this was really big.

So then I remembered hearing about the *Bush campaign in 2000 bring in busloads of loyalists for rallies. And I wondered. Would these be new people? who hadn't been to a *Bush speech before? or was the hall "packed"? What I find hard to believe is that they just put an ad in the paper and that many people just appeared. Well, I KNOW they don't do that.

I also caught a moment at the end where *Bush is gladhanding the crowd. It gave me a sick feeling. Think cult.

I've got to stop freaking over evidence that *Bush has any support at all. And you were right in your previous post about the sorts of people he attracts.

And incidentally, I've wondered (without knowing anything about it, really) if there might have been some vote-tampering in WV and some other states, as well as FL, in 2000. I got a really bad feeling about Teresa LePore in Palm Beach--supposedly a Democrat but, in her position as county election supervisor, doing terrible damage without showing a bit of real distress about it. And then I wondered if there had been a plan to plant people in such positions, and even get some of them to call themselves "Democrats," and just quietly subvert elections all over the country. I know it's paranoid to wonder, but it's hard not to. It was hard to see WV and TN go to *Bush in 2000.

It's going to be a uphill battle here, President Clinton did a lot of damage here with his free trade policies and failure to live up to the promises he made to the steelworkers. If you heard the introduction the steelworker made for Bush*, he was telling the truth.
Those tariffs saved my job too.

But this editorial really tells me only that the newspaper is determined to be a Bush-booster. It's sheer propaganda. It might be true that *Bush saved some jobs in the mining and steel industries, but every other claim it makes for *Bush is false. (It also lies about and misrepresents Kerry.)

Oh, and blaming Clinton for "his" free trade policies would be OK with me if you would also recognize that this has been and is the position of the GOP too. In fact, Clinton betrayed a lot of Democrats in going with NAFTA, etc. With that move, he was moving toward the GOP position (a la the DLC's "triangulation" trick). So *Bush, the uber-Republican, doesn't support free trade? His position on steel was an exception to the rule--done to get votes. Well, OK. If that is one's only issue, and one doesn't worry that he will do a reverse when he doesn't have to care about votes, then one might vote for *Bush. Meanwhile, the rest of the country, the economy, everything is going down the toilet.

Oh, and also, how do you reckon that that editorial will tell me anything about what the people of WV think? It's in what I assume is a right-wing paper. I guess I have to trust that the people will see through the BS and vote Kerry. But we shall see.
