Some guys are out on the battlefield while others are hiding back with the military gear. Gear being storage areas for uniforms etc.

| 18. Yeah - anyone remember how the Freepers trashed Gore |
|
cause he was a journalist in Vietnam and not on the frontlines? Don't know if they used this line, but probably close.
Amazing how they can run AWOL and actually trash the vets who were there like Gore and Kerry while their guy was "far in the rear with the gear"

| 15. Alternate is "In the rear with the beer" |
|
Comes from combat Soldiers/Marines. Their reference to those who extoll their "service" when that service was remaining at base camp well away from the frontline or stationed at home.

If someone was drafted and given that duty, no problem. I got the impression that the caller meant that this is what they called guy's like Bush* who actively tried to avoid being sent to Vietnam. If anyone has a right to feel that way, it's vets who volunteered and served. I wouldn't argue with them even though I was against that war.

...he closest FratBoy got to "in-country" was when he watched John Wayne's 1968 move "The Green Berets".

| 19. right - in the rear with the gear |
|
usually means the people who aren't on the front lines or non-infantry or artillery or tank types. The people who are doing logistics and so forth. Truthfully, Bush wishes he could say he was "in the rear with the gear".

The guy talked about what a dangerous assignment the Vietnam swift boats were. I guess that voluntarily putting yourself into an extremely dangerous situation and serving bravely only counts if you suffer an egregious wound or die. Oh wait, Max Cleland wasn't given any credit for his service either.

| 12. Those "in the rear with the gear" actually served a useful purpose.. |
|
and provided the necessary support to the field troops. * did NONE of that.
I have more respect for those who served as clerk-typists in armored units stationed in Germany during the Vietnam war than I do for Bush.
Fucking punk.
