NEW YORK CITY — President George W. Bush and U.S. Sen. George F. Allen, R-Va., need each other this year.

As chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, Allen is charged with increasing the Republicans’ 51-49 majority in the U.S. Senate, where Democrats have stymied many of Bush’s policy initiatives and judicial candidates.

In turn, Allen’s stock as a contender for the 2008 Republican presidential nomination will rise or fall with Bush’s electoral vote count in November, some political analysts say.

Allen’s job with the senate committee is to help recruit and finance GOP candidates across the country. He is spending much of his time this week at the Republican national convention introducing his candidates to big donors.
