And Obama is coming to Indy on Wednesday.
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - The race for president in Indiana is a dead heat according to the new WISH-TV Indiana Poll. The poll confirms that Indiana is a battleground state in part because two of the top three issues in the spring, health care and the war, gave way to bigger concerns at the moment.
The numbers are even: 46 percent for Barack Obama and 46 percent for John McCain. Three percent named another candidate and just five percent are undecided.
Obama-Indiana spokesman Jonathan Swain said the race is right where they thought it would be at this point. The Obama campaign got to where it is by spending millions of dollars in Indiana, most of it on television ads.
The Republican National Committee fought back with ads for McCain as both candidates addressed the issues voters care about most. According to the WISH-TV poll, those issues include the economy, the high price of gas, and taxes.
The poll also found that Sarah Palin is helping the Republicans more than Joe Biden is helping the Democrats, but only slightly. And, while race is a factor, 87 percent of the likely voters polled said they would vote for a black candidate.
"We certainly feel that if we go into Election Day with it tied, as your poll shows, that we can come out the winner on November 4," said Swain.
With Barack Obama coming to Indianapolis Wednesday the McCain campaign brought its first paid Indiana staffers on board this week and there is talk of a McCain Indiana campaign stop..
"We know we gotta work for every vote. We're gonna keep doing that and I suspect that probably includes a visit," said McCain-Indiana spokesman Luke Messer.
Both campaigns will have to do whatever they can because the race doesn't get any tighter than it is now.
