In the opening statement of his response to President Bush's GOP convention acceptance speech, Sen. John Kerry claimed the Boston Red Sox moved to within 2.5 games of the division-leading New York Yankees.

He was wrong. The Red Sox began the night 3.5 games behind the New York Yankees and ended the evening in the same place as both teams won.

this is what a candidate has people for. You turn to someone and say "I want to say something about the Red Sox tonight. Go find out what they did?"

To some people, little things like this are a big deal. Someone may not know who's wrong on medicare funding, but they sure know who's wrong on the Red Sox. These kinds of mistakes shouldn't happen.

Kerry gave them an opening a MILE WIDE with getting the standings off BY ONE GAME!

Bush could hardly move his arm in that bulletproof vest on the first night of the 2001 World Series. But he still pitched the ball!

Yanks really tank as the runner up in the AL East is probably going to win the wild card anyway. For psychological and home field advantage it is always better to win the division title though. The Cleveland fiasco seems to have awakened the Yankee bats. This weekend could be telling. Yanks host Baltimore and Sox host Texas.

16. Speaking of baseball, did anyone figure out the baseball motif

of Bush's speech?(pitcher's mound stage and the end of the video). Maybe I am slow but it didn't really connect for me. A baseball pitcher is like the CIC? I would think the baseball manager would be more akin to the CIC. The pitcher, after all, gets yanked by the manager if he screws up or runs out of gas. He doesn't get to finish the game - which seemed to be the analogy, that Bush is the pitcher and a pitcher finishes what he starts.

he has the best view of the field, and controls where the pitcher should try to put the ball over the plate. in a lot of games, it's the catcher who tells the manager, via signals, when it is time to yank the pitcher.

So, if Bush is the "pitcher" then guess who the catcher would be?

23. Oh, but what a hero Bush was at that game.

You heard Fred Thompson. The odds were against him. Bush knew he had to come to the rescue and throw out that first pitch at the World Series. So he heroicly had an aide make... a phone call! He may not know his way around a Swift Boat, but he knew his way around a telephone. That complete mastery. It's must be genetic. I mean not just anybody can call Ben Barnes under dire circumstances. That other heroic story will be in a piece that scheduled to be on 60 Minutes on the 12th. But I digress. Back to the heroic story du jour. (Oh, sorry. I wrote something in French. My bad.)

The wheels were in motion. There's no turning back now! The fate of...well, something important, was in the balance!

The challenges were great. Thompson told us in heroic fashion how difficult it was to heroically throw with a bullet-proof vest on. With that vest on, the sheer agony he endured when heroically throwing must have been unimaginable. But he was going to persevere in a heroic manner. Those fans, and indeed America, needed that first pitch.

(If my typing becomes illegible, please forgive me. It's just that I'm getting so choked up just typing about that hero on that fateful day.)

He was going to throw at the base of the pitcher's mound until Jeter told him to go to the top of the mound. And then that video showed how dramatically, how heroically he threw that baseball. Facing unsurmountable odds, Bush faced down the challenge of throwing that incredibly important first pitch and saved America.

What a hero.

Wait a second. I'm getting a special bulletin from the Bizarro World Newswire. It seems a group has formed to challenge the claims made about Bush's heroism on the diamond. They are claiming that his bullit proof vest wasn't made of Kevlar but rather of Mylar. Consequently, he may not have hurt himself that severely during that throw. In fact, they are claiming that he may not have even thrown that baseball in the first place. There are also reports that this group may feel that, when Bush spoke out against steroids at the State of the Union address this year, they may feel insulted and betrayed, like a slap in the face. We are investigating if this group has any offices in Sacramento.

Despite the overwhelming evidence that Bush was indeed on the baseball diamond and threw that baseball on that day, as well as the fact that this group has absolutely no documentation to back up their claims, we have decided this group, who are calling themselves Baseball Veterans For The Truth, will be covered ad nauseum in order to fill in the gap left by the abrupt end to the Kobe trial.
