| How should Kerry position himself? |
|
How should Kerry position himself wrt the Times poll? When ('when' not 'if') it becomes obvious that the Times poll was an outlier/mistake/anomalie and the numbers tighten up again, how should Kerry (and us) respond? I honestly believe for one reason or another those Times numbers are a mistake and will change back very soon. Although they may not acknowledge it. I think they screwed up the poll and the next one with be significantly different from the latest one.
Should the Dem response be:
"The times poll was an error. Someone made a mistake in the data."
"Wow. Bush sure lost that post-convention bump fast." (Even if we believe that wasn't a bump, but a mistake)
I see some advantage in the second approach. Creating some downward momentum for *.
Ignore it? Something else?

I think it should just be ignored. It's still early. Poll numbers are probably going to continue fluctuating right up until the election.
Besides, the media love a horserace, especially if they can egg it on. It means ratings and $$. Why feed into that? I think the Kerry/Edwards team should simply forge ahead with the campaign. Both men and their wives are articulate and know how to connect with people. They should just keep playing to their strengths.
Also, this is completely unscientific and anecdotal, but I have yet to see a single Bush/Cheney lawn sign. I have seen more than a few Kerry/Edwards signs though, even in areas that have long been conservative strongholds. This to me indicates division among the ranks.
Just my 2 cents fwiw.
