Subject: Did Newsweek moritfy Sarah Palin?

October 9, 2008

Newsweek Made Obama Look Presidential

I mentioned this earlier this week and I am really glad I saved the video of Sarah Palin’s talking head, Andrea Tantaros, going after Newsweek for mortifying Sarah. Among other things she accused Newsweek of touching up their Obama covers to hide imperfections and make him appear presidential.

She claimed any woman who looks at the Palin cover this week will be horrified. Let me be the first to say Sarah Palin’s face, even with imperfections isn’t as horrifying as her ideas. Ms Tantaros through one heck of a tantrum on Fox News and Meghan what’s-her-name was in complete sympathy. I don’t know if it was because I called McCain’s National Campaign office and yelled, “Are you crazy? Losing your house is mortifying, losing your job is mortifying, having Newsweek not touch up your imperfections isn’t mortifying”, but they took the Fox piece off the site.

The Democratic spokeswoman seemed to think the picture wasn’t that bad. She asked if we know that Newsweek touched up Obama’s pictures and bless her itty heart Meghan said we didn’t really now that. The Obama cover they were waving around was from June 2, 2008 and Ms Tantaros said they made it look like he almost had a halo.

It’s a bit fuzzy and back lit, hence the halo, and is a lot better that the others as far as imperfections go. I found out today that the Moore Library has a great color printer and I printed all the Obama covers since he announced, along with an array of other close-up covers. Meghan kept waving the two magazines around saying, “you can’t see it on TV, but take my word for it, this is terrible.” A lot of the ones of Obama are black and white.

On the July 16, 2007 cover you can see every pore, which is one of Ms. Tantaros’ complaints. You can see every wrinkle and it appears he could use a shave. You can see stubble on his lip and his chin.

On the February 11, 2008 cover there is a picture of McCain that is as close as the one of Sarah Palin and you can even see 2 of his melanoma scars, along with every wrinkle and pore, but he doesn’t need a shave.

Obama on the January 14, 2008 cover could probably use a flossing and you can see a number of blackheads or very dark freckles, pores and his wrinkles.

On the January 21, 2008, “I found my voice” issue there is a close up of Hillary Clinton. Not as close as the one of Sarah Palin and she is wearing make-up, but so is Sarah in her picture. You can see crow’s feet and a few gray hairs and it almost looks like she put on her make-up with something on her head because her make-up seems to end about an inch from the edge of her scalp.

On the cover of the “What He Believes”, July 21, 2008 issue, Obama seems to be praying and it is another real close-up. You can see every pore and imperfection and again he needs a shave. On top of everything else his cuticles are a mess. He may have a little bobo on his right index finger just on the cuticle and he seems to have a scar along the nail of his middle finger.

The cover of the “Hear her Roar” issue has Hillary Clinton in profile and back-lit. You can see every itty little hair on her profile and her crow’s feet, but the side of her face you can see is pretty dark.

Obama and Biden are both on the September 1, 2008 cover and both are wearing flag pins. McCain hasn’t worn one for either debate. Biden has some turkey neck going on and lots of wrinkles. Obama’s crows feet are more pronounced in this picture.

Hillary and Obama are both on the January 1, 2008 cover, but I am pretty sure they weren’t together for the picture. Hillary has 6 layers of wrinkles on the left side of her smile and they continue down her neck and under her collar and Obama needs a shave.

The February 19, 2007 cover has close-ups of the right side of the president of Iran’s face and the left side of George W. Bush’s face. Dubya has a lot of wrinkles, freckles, needs a shave and looks really mad. The Iranian is smirking a little and you can see very pore on his face.

The January 15, 2007 cover has a picture of a beautiful woman who is trying to understand menopause. You can see wrinkles and pores, but she probably waxed her mustache.

October 9, 2007 Mitt Romney had what may be some sort of spot on his left cheek he should have the doctor look at. He has a lot of wrinkles around his eyes, but great hair.

Holy Huckabee is on the December 17, 2007 cover and he needs a shave and has lots of forehead wrinkles. He and Mitt’s pictures are definitely done like Olan Mills or something.

Now for Sarah, it isn’t anywhere close to being mortifying. Maybe a couple of unwanted facial hairs, but you have to look really close. She has a couple of little bumps and a lot of wrinkles under her eyes. She is wearing glasses with rectangular lenses. He eyebrows look better that any of the other pictures of women.

It is my considered opinion and the opinions of others I have shown these pictures to that you can see more imperfections on Obama’s pictures than this one of Sarah and I don’t think they have touched up any of the pictures.

As far as I can see Ms. Tantaros even misinterpreted the headline, “She’s One of The Folks (And that’s the problem.)” I haven’t read the story, but just from the title my impression is they do not consider the identifying with the folks as Sarah’s problem, but the Democrats problem. The folks seem to think she is one of them even if she is worth a couple a million.

I have said this before, all the makeup and touching up on the planet may make Sarah Palin look like Mrs. America, but it won’t make her more qualified or look presidential while she is spewing crap.

I suspect they took down the video because Meghan and Andrea took a look at the Obama covers and found out they were wrong.

1. The neocons are just bitching in order to bitch. Palin looks gorgeous
I worry about what's behind the pretty smile, but you'd be insane to look at that photo and say this is not a very attractive woman.

2. There's an underlying metaphor here. What they're really pissed about
is that the media are looking too closely at the whole Palin story, and the real blemishes being revealed are the ones on her character.

4. Sexism is calling a woman's looks 'horrifying' because her photo isn't airbrushed.
They are being FAR more insulting to her with this bullshit than what they're accusing Newsweek of.

5. Here's a flash for people looking to be on TV .....
HDTV is going to bring out blemishes and everything else in ultra detail. Get used to it. Use lotsa make-up or see your skin/botox specialists.

6. I don't know anyone who could have handled a close-up like that
and look as great as she did. This woman has had 5 children, lives in inhospitable climate and is by no means in her 20s, yet she still looked amazing. The right is so consumed by putting up facades they've lost sight of anything real.

7. I agree. Her unbrushed face is not nearly as horrifying as her ideas. //
And yes, I've seen many unflattering portraits of Democrats everywhere.

I look forward to the day when this saved item in your archives will appear like a really strange artifact of deranged times. When political campaigns actually promoted a talking point against a popular magazine for not altering a photograph to flatter a candidate.

8. this is simple. to be consistent, it has not been about her looks since day one. it is the right
that uses her looks as all that she is that are horrified. this is not what a female is and sick on the society that places looks above all else in a person, female particularly.

9. The people who are complaining are the same ones who...
supposedly love Palin because she's "REAL."

The Rethugs always want it both ways.

10. This is why Republican women are anti-woman. I think Palin looks beautiful ....
Honestly, the first thing I thought of when I saw that cover was, for her age, how nearly flawless she was. How very few women could have a close up like that and look so good. If ANYTHING, on a purely shallow level, I was envious.

Only a bitchy little chauvinist (yes women can be chauvinist) would find fault with that cover.

11. Close up or not Palin has icy eyes as well as a cruel mouth.
If you look beyond her glasses she really does have that blank icy look in her eyes. After all eyes are the windows to the soul.

14. Thanks for posting this
Even though this is about a "silly season" non-issue, I like to read stuff that is researched and completely factual....although we'll never see it on TV to debunk this ridiculous rant by the right.

I couldn't believe my ears the other day when listening to some of this.....there was a woman on some channel actually complaining that you could see blackheads on Palin's face.

Other than being completely off-color, it made me throw up a little bit.
