http://www.registerguard.com/csp/cms/sites/web/opinion/1152240-47/story.cspGeorge W. Bush’s presidency has left the United States a diminished nation. A continuing war has been justified by deception and conducted with blindness. The economy has been managed for the benefit of those at the apex of the pyramid, and now the free-market ideology guiding that policy lies discarded by the roadside as the financial system lurches from one crisis to another. Undisciplined spending coupled with free-handed tax cuts have transformed budget surpluses to deficits, doubling the national debt. Such pressing problems as energy, health care and entitlement reform have been left to fester. The United States’ standing in the world as a defender of human dignity and the rule of law has been squandered.

McCain is a man of courage and deep dedication. It is his misfortune to be running at a time when political circumstances so strongly favor the Democrat. Obama’s ascent, however, should not be regarded as an accident of timing. Success in politics may depend on luck, but leadership requires an ability to catch the winds of history in one’s sails. Obama shows every sign of having that rare ability. Voters should make him their president.
