Conservative leaders cooling toward Keyes

CHICAGO -- They winced at his “Israeli uzi” comment. They questioned his position on reparations. But the “selfish hedonist” remark did damage.
Some conservatives leaders are cooling toward conservative Republican U.S. Senate candidate Alan Keyes .
“I think Alan is right on the issues, but he just has to pull back on the rhetoric,” said Ruth O’Connell , a Wheeling Township committeewoman and trustee.
O’Connell cancelled Keyes’ Saturday appearance at the Buffalo Grove Days parade, where Republicans planned to march with Bush signs. “I hated to do that, but I didn’t want to take away from President Bush ,” explained O’Connell. “I just didn’t want the controversy.”
