1. Shrub is pretty good at debates

He's beaten Ann Richards and Al Gore, both of whom were very good debaters, with his gee-whiz-just-folks "charm". Plus, the media will be pulling for him very hard. Why wouldn't he love a debate?

2. They are not really "debates". One can win all the points with logic,

clarity, intelligence, common sense and completely annihilate the opponents ideas and still lose if the media and polls see the other as "friendly" or "nice". A few cutesy one-liners and well placed joke can "win" the debate because it is entertainment.
