She's been lost so long, we may not recognize her when we see her again, at long last.

But we'll be gentle with her; we'll lovingly bathe and feed her and dress her, and coax her back to what she once was. And even if "what she once was" ever existed only in the yearning of our minds, we may make that yearning a reality yet.

Men walked - WALKED - from Maine to Georgia to preserve the Union. Women struggled and fought, just to be able to VOTE. Black folks suffered abuses unimaginable to those of us who are not black, just to be able to live the same kind of life that white folks always could.

Just to be American.

Millions upon millions of immigrants came here and wore themselves out, working, working, and then working some more.

Just to be American. Or so their kids could be.
