I think the AWOL story is very important. But, it is not worth a bucket of spit all by itself. It's too easy for the right and the media whores to write off as water under the bridge. He's found Jesus, for Christ's sake!
Therefore, the Kerry campaign, or a progressive group, has to link how Bush* behaved back then with how he has behaved recently. If a compelling case can be made that he hasn't changed, he's in big trouble.
There are several lines of attack that I see. First, Bush*s relentless vacationing. He goofs off at every opportunity instead of doing his job. Just like partying and not showing up for ANG duty, he's doing the same in the White House.
Another approach would be his dereliction of duty leading up to 9/11. There is plenty of material avail on that.
Maybe even his lack of due diligence prior to invading Iraq would work. At any rate, we need LINKAGE between then and now. Show that the skunk hasn't lost his stripe!
