Said to read the 14th Amendment, Section 3 for the reason why Senator Kerry can't serve. Well, I read it, and all it says is that no one can serve in elected office if they have aided and abetted the enemy. I have heard these charges before, about Kerry meeting with the North Vietnamese. I've never seen it proven though. Anyone have thoughts on this?

with NV telling them not to accept LBJ's peace deal. He told them Nixon would give them a better deal. Nixon won because the Dems were blamed for not arriving at a peace deal. Nixon prolonged the war for four more years before negotiating essentially the same deal LBJ had offered them.
Kerry went to Paris as part of a group of activists who wanted to be on the scene during the peace talks and Kerry talked briefly to the NV ambassador as a private citizen. He had no influence on anything.
Bush tried to appoint Kissinger to head the 9/11 commission.
Who are the traitors? Who is responsible for prolonging the war? Who negotiated with the enemy agains the best interests of American soldiers and citizens? Not only are the answeres to these questions, "NOT Kerry," but the Republicans have in their midsts people who are guilty of precisely the allegations they are making against Kerry.

I appreciated you taking the time to give your thoughts. I was aware of Senator Kerry trying to negotiate peace, but I was just wondering if there was anything they are trying to use from his days with VVAW. Sorry for asking.

First, the most insane part of this whole story is that Kerry or anyone other than Kissinger could have negotiated with the North Vietnamese in 1971. Kerry was a private citizen and had no authority to speak for anyone but himself and his organization.
Under this crap, state governors who have done business with Cuba are abetting the enemy as well, no???
How these revisionist purposely avoid a main cause of the Vietnam Veterans Against the War other than forcing Nixon to negotiate in good faith and end the war...it was finding out the status of American POWs. NO ONE, NO ONE, said boo about these people for most of their captivity...they were an embarassment in a war that was turning into a worse embarassment.
The nerve of these wingnut chickenshits to start all this mess and then go crying when their boy's record is now put under a similar, but far from equal light. It was the right wing that called the returning vets "baby killers" and losers...those of us who protested the war knew how much these people had been abused.
Kerry DID eventually negotiate with the North Vietnamese. It was in 1993 to open diplomatic relations and John McCain was standing right next to him.

It is so late, I'm sure no one will see this. I believe this story comes from JK's visit to Viet Nam as a senator in negotiations for the accounting and return of remains of missing US servicemen. JK toured the prison where McCain was held and was presented his flight helmet which he gave to McCain upon his return. JK and McCain were both sponsors of legislation that brought this healing endeavor about. Somehow, the nut jobs, criminally insane, and the naive are willing to stretch this into something it isn't.
I'm happy for someone who has the stomach to listen to those people who somehow get phone privileges from whatever institution they patients in so they can call C-Span.

That section of the 14th is known as the Civil War Clause, it allowed members of the ex-Confederate government back into Congress.
Note the phrase:
"shall have engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the same"
Vietnam was not an "insurrection or rebellion against the same", it was FOREIGN war (actually not even that since Congress never formally declared war).
So next time you hear some tired Repug bring up this claptrap, just say:
"Nice Try, Wrong War"
