Are YOU registering NEW voters?

This is where the election will be won IMO. As far as I'm concerned, there is a concerted effort by 'the man' (whoever you believe that to be) to suppress voter turnout. The newschannels should be reminding people that they have less than a month to register--in the same way they notify us of turning the clocks back.

I worry every election time that people don't realize they have to REGISTER before voting. Especially young and first time voters. Many people don't think about the elections until the debates start, until it gets close--and sucks for them, because they then cannot vote.

New voters=votes for Kerry. I don't have the stats, but if I remember correctly every time voter turnout increases, Dems benefit. That's one of the reasons the GOP was so determined to kill Motor Voter laws.

Just a reminder to make sure everyone you know (and meet) are registered to vote this year.

Deputy voter registrar here. Went to a meetup a while back where about 25 of us became voter registrars. Yee-ha!

4. My plan....

I'm starting on Friday at the nursing homes to register and re-register those who've moved but haven't re-registered....

Then I'm going door-to-door in my precinct

Oct. 1,2,3
October 4th if I can do it on that last day!

Hopefully I can get some! I have the forms. I'm also going to work tonight and will try to register voters there if they're not.

5. One!

At least I hope so, and will follow up. The wonderfully gentle and quiet fellow who takes care of the barn and animals where I board my horse. He never says much, works incredibly hard, and I would certainly trust my horse and probably my own life to him if I had to--one of those kind of guys. The other day someone was joking about something, and he shook his head after they walked away, and said softly, "I dunno, the way things are going..."

Something about his tone caught my attention. I looked at him sideways and said, "Are you registered to vote?" He looked kinda embarrassed and said no. I asked if he'd like me to bring him a form and absentee request, and he really brightened up. He works all day at the barn and I doubt he'd take time to go into town to either register or vote.

So I brought it the next day, and told him the deadline, and he said he'd send it as soon as possible. We didn't discuss any politics. I may if it seems to come up naturally, but he's not the kind of person I want to brow-beat.

On edit: This is New Mexico, where Gore won by only 300-odd votes. Every single one counts here.

7. I register everyday on my lunch break downtown

I ask people if they have any young relatives who are not registered yet or know anyone who has moved since the last election.

I also register people when I go to the grocery store

In this area, I'd be fearful of approaching people without them first expressing an interest in registering (and voting preferably for the Democratic ticket). This is heavy-duty GOP territory -- many Bush/Cheney signs and bumperstickers around, virtually none for Kerry/Edwards.

Does that count? I have convinced a few of my "My vote doesnt matter" coworker types to register to vote and I told them I planned on voting for Kerry and that they should vote for whoever they think the agree with I didn't want to be too overbearing with the vote for Kerry dialog but, I do give them pro Kerry information and anti Bush info. As of now everyone and I mean almost everyone I know is voting for Kerry. I still have a couple of fundies to work on.

About 20% were new voters, and 20% changing affiliation to Democrat.

Working with Dallas For Kerry -- we think we've registered about 2000 so far. We're not entirely sure... we're not the best record keepers. We are, after all, Democrats. :)

19. I've changed 2 people's minds so far...

One that was going to vote for Bush and another that was going to vote 3rd party. I felt particularly triumphant about changing the Bush voter's mind. There's another guy at my work that I think I'm very close to changing from a Bush voter to Kerry, I really think I'll win him over before the election.

Every day I'm working on encouraging people. I'm in a swing state so every vote matters.
