destruction for people and higher gas prices for those already struggling in the "bushcorner-turned" economy.
Yippee, all for Kerry to maybe be elected President.
Yeehaw, fuck those cajuns in Louisiana anyway. What we need is us some bad economic news, then they'll vote for Kerry.

Is that a good place for a storm surge to hit? Actually it would wash the puke off Bourbon Street - you're right it might be good.

The series of flood walls will trap the water inside and goodbye New Orleans. So, I won't joke about it, though know what you meant...

a direct hit on New Orleans could literally destroy the city. The French Quarter would be under 20 feet of water.
I love New Orleans - I want it around awhile longer.

That area is a center for refineries and chemical manufacturing. Cover a chemical plant with twenty feet of water for a few days and you have an ecological catastrophe. The Gulf may never be the same.

There's a silver lining benefit to the admin. They can blame the price of gas rising on Ivan, and the american public, ever understanding and generous in a tragedy, will give shrub a pass, maybe even a boost if he rides in there to save the day.
Worked for JEB! down here, everyone is gushing over his performance in the press.

|
as you are "hoping" that LA gets hit.
My hope is that the storm weakens and hits the least populated area possible. I am in no way hoping that it destroys the oil platforms as that will also mean it destroys lots of real people's lives.

does big time damage to LA. Sorry, but you don't get a pass on that one. That is as cold a statement as I would expect to hear from the worst of the Republicans.
If it has to hit somewhere hope it does as little damage as possibe.

Here's hoping it hits the lowest populated, most evacuated area. Here's hoping those on the oil rigs get out safe and have a job when the storm passes.

| 19. Be careful what you wish for. You have no idea of the potential disaster, |
|
Edited on Tue Sep-14-04 11:59 AM by WVhill
A hurricane with sufficient strength that wipes out NO would have a high probability of changing the course of the Mississippi River. It would be the greatest disaster to hit the US. The studies indicate that all the pipelines would be washed out along with the other devastation. Besides higher gasoline prices, you can expect much higher natural gas and electricity prices especially in the Midwest and Northeast. Going into the winter you'd see an unimaginable amount of long lasting economic damage to this country from the after effects.
FWIW, a lot of our electrical capacity now relies on natural gas supplies. Without the gas fired units, you can count on extensive brownouts and possible electrical outages and grid failures if we have a hot summer the following year. You'd almost certainly see government mandated rationing for some commodities. Keep in mind we're already short refinery capacity in this country. I don't think you'd see a modest gas price increase. I think the potential would be for a multiplier of the current price. Think $3, $4 per gal gas or higher.

| 24. Look folks, all I'm trying to say is |
|
That this hurricane is ferocious and it's going to hit somewhere on the gulf cost. Wishing for anything other than that is just fantasy. Now, given the inevitable, all I'm saying is that in addition to the destruction it will bring wherever it goes, if it has the additional effect of harming Bush's reelection chances it could actually serve some good.
The repukes have used Ivan as an excuse to put Nader on the ballot in Florida. I didn't just make up the notion that such a storm can have political consequences -- it can as we see in Florida. I'm just hoping that such consequences may benefit our side this time.
As for the people, cities and towns that will be effected, of course I hope and pray for their safety. I'm in no way hoping for personal harm. But if there is going to be destruction of property somewhere (and there is), if it results in a reminder of the insanity of our dependence on fossil fuels and also affects what appears to be a statistical corollary to Bush's popularity, then so be it. I apologize if I've offended anybody. That was certainly not my intention.

It's not that disaster should befall the people of one polticial persuasion or another, but rather that if the operation of oil refineries is interrupted, there would be a political consequence.

it would give bush an excuse to point to for rising oil prices, as he points to 9-11 to explain our massive deficit.

Perhaps, rather than suggesting that I "read for comprehension", you should work on your writng skills so that you can make your point without insulting or pissing off everyone who reads your thread, especially the DUers of Louisiana.

I think I write this as someone who rarely agreed with you in the primaries, and as someone who only glances at the majority of your current posts. That said...
I read your OP exactly as you're describing it's intent. That IF Ivan has to hit somewhere, MAYBE SOME political good can come of it. I was going to respond that yeah, why should Jeb and George get to exploit Florida for photo-ops anymore?
But after reading you getting slammed, I felt the need to post this instead:
It never ceases to amaze me how people's reading comprehension skills deteriorate as levels of fear or personal interest increase.
I get/got your OP and you have nothing to apologize for.

I never knew of the correlation.
I hope the hurricane hits right here, in Lafayette, Louisiana... Most of the oil industry is here and in Baton Rouge. A direct hit on the New Orleans area could literally destroy the city, as it is below sea level.
It would economically devastate my state and people may die from the hurricane but that is a small price to pay for the tens or hundreds of thousands of deaths that would result from wars with Iran, Syria and North Korea.
