Let's be honest; at 2 minutes-30 seconds, this video is never going on TV; the hope is that the media or political junkies will talk it up. That said, it was a waste of time and money to prepare and film this.

Issues of historic character are useful when someone runs for office for the first time; absent a record of public accomplishments, we have to look to past behavior to make a judgement about future behavior. However, once someone is in office, especially that of the Presidency, the focus of voters is on what's been accomplished, or not accomplished during the past term. Historical character only becomes applicable if newly-discovered criminal actions (including lying under oath are identified. Simply saying "he lied to you then" is useless, unless you lay out a pattern of continued lying when in office. Saying "he lied before becoming President, he lied while President, he'll lie to you again" would be effective; this video doesn't offer that message.

Those voters who are still undecided are presumably unhappy about life today (or they'd be supporting the President in larger numbers) but not so riled up that political issues like this one are important. What IS important to them are security, the fate of their friends and relatives in the military, their jobs, medical costs and financial future. These are the issues which, I would argue, the Kerry campaign has not clearly stated policies which are understandable to the voters as being different from and better than those of Bush-Cheney. Staff time spent on this video was staff time spent NOT putting together ads on these issues. With 6 months to go, and Kerry behind in the polls (by how much isn't the issue), his team can't afford to get distracted.

Whether or not we should have gone into Iraq, it is clear that this moron and his henchman screwed it up horribly. Discarded post-war planning by the State Department, opted for insufficient forces in order to prove a bullshit military theory of the Secretary of Defense (at the needless expense of American and Iraqi lives), and remain "steadfast" in their incompetence.

Every minute spent talking about Bush's lack of service in the Guard is time lost that could have been spent talking about his miserable failures as President.

It was way too long for TV and honestly if it's just going to stay on the Internet I don't think it will accomplish much...because we already know it. This type of ad has to appeal to the TV audience and break them out of their complacency. At the current length and pace it doesn't do that.

Not saying I don't like it...I do. But I think it needs to get a lot more pop in 20 seconds than it had in the minute or whatever that it had. Maybe instead of the ponderous voice over it should just play the song and flash up the words over the screen like a TBTM flash...Symbolman should have a full time job doing these for the DNC. At this point I just want to see fast, pointed, and clear ads that nail the point home in short enough bursts that they can be absorbed between Monday Night Football plays...because SADLY that's the attention span of the average voter these days.

.....appreciate very much the dig that the title and the theme sends to Karl Rove. "Fortunate Son" was, of course, the book authored by James Hatfield, who was "suicided" after being used by Rove to innoculate Bush against cocaine charges.

I think it's a poke in Rove's eye, and a challenge.

Bush's Harvard Professor speaks out now, stating that he recalls a conversation with Bush in which Bush admitted that he was a "Fortunate Son" and was given preferential treatment to get into the National Guard. Incredibly, Bush was nonetheless a strong supporter of the Vietnam war, according to the Professor.
