Maryland court sticks us with Diebold - a national trend?

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Maryland's highest court has rejected a challenge to the state's electronic voting system and upheld a ruling that touchscreen-style voting machines provide a reasonable level of ballot security.

This is an outrage. What recourse is left? Should we vote absentee? How can this be stopped from spreading to other states?!

3. State board of elections requires a reason for absentee voting

As a registered voter, you may vote by absentee ballot if you are unable to go to the polls on election day because:

* you may be absent from your county of registration;
* you are suffering from an accident, illness or physical disability;
* you are confined in, or restricted to, an institution;
* you are attending to a death or serious illness in your family;
* you have academic obligations at an institution of higher education outside your precinct, but within your county of registration;
* you are employed by the Board of Elections and must be absent from the precinct in which you are registerd; or
* you are age 65 or older and your polling place is inaccessible.

2. This is insane!

My husband belongs to TrueVote Maryland, one of the plaintiffs in the case. TrueVote is extremely frustrated by this situation.

We cannot figure out why the state's powerful Democratic party is so completely opposed to requiring a paper voting trail from the Diebold machines. Even our US Senators, Mikulski and Sarbanes, seem to think this is all hunky dory.

I can't promise that True Vote will appeal, but I sure hope so! I'd think the next step would be the US Supreme Court, but given the court's makeup, they'll probably reject the case and let the state court decision stand.
