New York Special Election May Get a Winner
By Emily Cadei, CQ Staff
The next phase of absentee ballot-counting in New York’s special congressional election begins later this week, but it is starting to look like a formality, with Democrat Scott Murphy cementing his lead over Republican Jim Tedisco, based on votes counted so far.
Dutchess County-based Supreme Court Justice James Brands ordered the delivery of more than 1,700 absentee ballots that have been challenged during the counting process to the state Board of Elections by April 23. They are the only ballots still to be counted in the special election to fill the vacant 20th Congressional District seat.
Since April 8, officials have counted 5,300 absentee ballots, or approximately 80 percent the absentees cast.
Murphy has expanded his lead over Tedisco to 273 votes from a tenuous 59-vote lead on election night, March 31.
