Why are people encouraged to buy big honkin' vehicles with low gas mileage?

WHy are people encouraged to shop all the time?

Why are people encouraged to spend all their money and live paycheck to paycheck?

Why are people not encouraged to save their money, and take sabbaticals now & then?

Why are people encouraged to value possessions more than anything else?

Why do we have to be a Consumer Society?

Why are there so many really scared people in the least likely to be hit parts of America? Why are so many people still voting to get screwed?
