they were at weekly picketing of Planned Parenthood centers. The kids looked exhausted (Tucson in summer) downtrodden, confused and completely resigned to shuffling along doing something they didn't comprehend.
You could see that even tho they did not understand what was going on, they knew there was something wrong with their being forced to participate. Most kids have an innate sense of justice and they know, even if they don't have the life experience and verbal tools to express disagreement, when they are being treated badly. That the abuse is heaped upon them by the people they innately know should have their best interests at heart is confusing to youngsters. No wonder the freepers are, the way they are; in many cases it is a madness inflicted from one generation to the next. You adopt the twisted values because to confront that your parents hate and misuse you is just too painful for many.
It is why the insist on shoving their values down everyone else's throats. They are so shakey about their own experiences that they cannot tolerate any opinions, or lifestyles which might force them to question their own foundations. That is the difference between faith and rigid indoctrination/belief.

They are brave, enduring and very very amazing. Easy to come out well if you were raised well. Extra tough to pretty much do it on your own.
Heros they are, who parented themselves and overcame what crippled so many. And it can happen at any point in life, can't it?
