Someone needs to correct Sean Hannity on the 1964 civil rights act

In an interview today, he went on and on about how democrats are the party of segregation, how Byrd and Al Gore Sr. voted against the Civil Rights act and how the GOP got it passed. The whole problem is that more Dems voted for it than Repubs, not including LBJ who forced it through. George HW Bush voted against it, Barry Goldwater voted against it, Thurmond voted against it.
If it is so important that Gore voted against it, than why not George Bush '41?

for coming so unprepared for the questions that anyone who has done their homework knows that Hannity will ask. Hannity will of course bring up fulbright and Gore, and tell tall tales about how the GOP passed the civil rights act. I would have pointed out that Goldwater---the main conservative in the GOP voted against it, George Bush voted against it, Strom voted against it---Ronald Reagan even pubicly critized it when supporting Goldwater.
151 Dems voted for the Bill, 132 GOP---Those numbers are close, but not exact. More dems voted against it, but the Southern dems often became republicans

7. George H. W. Bush campaigned hot and heavy

against the Civil Rights Act in 1964. His father, Prescott was an advocate of the Civil Rights while belonging to whites only country clubs, etc. Pres talked the talk but couldn't walk the walk. Bush41 couldn't even pretend to talk the talk.

November 22, 1963 George H. W. Bush was with Barbara (Bar was at the beauty shop)in Tyler,TX campaigning for the US Senate speaking before a group of Kiwanis Club - all white men - when he received word that Kennedy had been assassinated. He was running on a platform that argued that the incumbent, Senator Ralph Yarborough, was a "nigger" lover.

When the Civil Rights Act was signed into law Bush kept campaigning on "states' rights" - code word for no federal intervention on racial matters. Bush41 was quoted as saying, "The new civil rights act was passed to protect 14 percent of the people, I'm also worried about the other 86 percent."

I am getting all of this from Kitty Kelley's book - page 214. Kitty, also, reveals that Bush 41 applied for flying medals ten years after the end of World War II - that his unit usually did not award. Bush41, with the eye on a political career, thought they would dress up the ol' resume.

8. The southern CONSERVATIVES abandoned the Democratic party

after the Civil Rights legislation. It was those southern conservative Democrats who opposed the legislation. The southern conservatives now make up the bulk of the Republican party.

The last Republican in Congress with a conscience was instrumental in helping Hubert Humphrey and Johnson get that passed. It was a Democratic initiative however

Those very democrats that voted against the civil rights acts, the Southern Bloc, knew that they could easily be voted out of office when the act was passed. Most of them eventually BROKE TIES with the democratic party. They also supported the likes of Barry Goldwater, an advocate of "states' rights", code word for non-government mandated integration, and REPUBLICAN, and ended up establishing the beginnings of the neo-con movement.

vote against it. They knew that they could not be elected in the south if they voted for it. Both men had supported minor legislation for civil rights but chickened out on the big one.
