Lynne Cheney Helps Soften Husband's Image

SHEBOYGAN FALLS, Wis. - Lynne Cheney smiles, nods and applauds. Sitting on a stool beside her husband, she shows none of the fire that made her a leading conservative in her own right. She is the adoring wife, the woman who knew Vice President Dick Cheney (news - web sites) when he was a teenager sweeping out the Ben Franklin store.

Mrs. Cheney, campaigning across the country for another four years as second lady, is downright warm. And she helps the vice president look a little warmer too.

"I get to introduce Dick because I've known him for so long," she says at nearly every campaign stop. "I have known Dick Cheney since he was 14 years old."

As Paul Begala says, "Don't pee on my boots and tell me it's raining."

that a bunch of "adoring" Stepford wives from the 1950s will attract the women's vote? Such tactics will only get the votes of other Stepford wives, who would probably have voted for Bush anyway. No self-respecting, independent, single woman will be impressed by the "adoring wife" act.
