I firmly believe that as the election gets closer, more voters are going to say the economy and health care are very important. It's alot easier to say Iraq and Security weeks before. Fill up your car with gas, stop for milk and check out your mail full of all the bills the night before going to the polls, and you may well give pocketbook issues higher ranking. We'll see.... I also don't believe that every "security mom" in America is waking up in the morning, quivering like jello in panic that there's a terrorist bomb in her kids school cloakroom. Truth is she's trying to figure out how to beat the carpool HOV and where to schedule the flu shot for Johnny.
War on Terror and Economy Continue to Dominate Election Issues but Health Care Moves Up, According to Latest Harris Poll
ROCHESTER, N.Y. – September 23, 2004 – The war on terror and the economy continue to be the most important issues for adult Americans. When asked to name the two issues which they think are most important for the government to address, the largest numbers mention the economy (30%) or jobs (14%) on the one hand and “the war” (24%), terrorism (14%), national security (6%) or Iraq (5%) on the other.
However, health care has been moving up the list and is now mentioned by 21 percent as one of the top two issues, compared to 17 percent in August and 10 percent in June. Another 3 percent mention Medicare specifically.
These are some of the results of a nationwide Harris Poll of 1,018 U.S. adults surveyed by telephone by Harris Interactive® between September 9 and 13, 2004.
When they are asked to choose specifically between the economy and jobs on the one hand and Iraq and the war on the other, likely voters split equally 47 to 48 percent.
