Underscoring just how dependent the government still is on outside help, interim Prime Minister Ayad Allawi urged the international community to set aside its differences over the legality of the invasion to oust Saddam Hussein and ``stand fast by Iraq.''
``We need to broaden the base of troop-contributing countries to (the multinational force) so that we would stand more determined and be better equipped to confront terrorism,'' he told the U.N. General Assembly in New York on Friday.... Fast foward 24 hours to the press conferencehttp://www.sacbee.com/content/politics/story/10854380p-11772131c.html...
Allawi later said that more troops are
not needed in Iraq to carry out the elections, beyond the 140,000 U.S. soldiers already there along with smaller contingents of newly trained Iraqi forces and troops from other countries.
To have more troops we don't need. What we need really is to train more Iraqis because this is ultimately for Iraqis, for Iraqi security forces to take responsibility for their own security and to defend the rest of the civilized world.Allawi's assessment contradicted that of Gen. John Abizaid, commander of U.S. troops in the Middle East, who said Wednesday that "we will need more troops than we currently have to secure the elections process in Iraq" and added that the extra soldiers will be Iraqis.
Bush said Thursday that he and Abizaid had met in the morning and the general hadn't told him more troops were needed,
"but if he were to say that, I'd listen to him."
How many times can one contradict oneself/each other within 24 hours??? Which is it ... do we need more troops or less troops?
