Please tell me I am paranoid.

Got a notice in the mail today from my friendly IRS. OK, sh*t happens. Everything is filed, paid, in order. Bring it on.

Well, apparently the friendly folks at the IRS have nothing better to do than ask me for returns for a business that I founded and owned for over 15 years, sold the assets four years ago (sometime ya just get tired and it isn't fun anymore) and closed down the business. At that time all returns were current, all taxes paid, all forms filed by the CPA and the business notified the tax man nothing more was to "cometh." All the T's crossed, i's doted and everybody is happy. Case closed.

Now they are telling me that I am in default for not filing returns for the last four years. I've got copies of everything, I can prove everything (after a trip to the storage facility, ugh!) but it got me to wondering...

Why now? Does my vocal opinions on the current administration have anything to do with it? I did have a little of a snafu with the local chairman of the GOP recently but I don't think even he has had time to sic the IRS on me. This is a first for me.

The line between paranoia and realistic thinking grows pretty thin.

But... chances are, the IRS is just maintaining it's usual level of competency. Several years ago, I got a nastygram saying I hadn't filed a tax return for the year 1984. When I called them and informed them that I was 13 that year, they said it was a fuckup.

6. Though I understand your paranoia (and I agree the line between

paranoia and reality is very, very thin) I would venture to guess that the IRS has just screwed up, which is normal. They keep trying to tax us for a period of time when we were not even in business. Every 6 months or so we get a notice and I send a letter with copies of my previous letters with backups docs (Articles of Incorporation, privilege licenses, etc.) and ask that they update their records.

Good luck to you - sounds to me like you will be able to straighten things out.

for possibility in your case (I think) is timing. Did you do something long ago enough that the wheels could have been set in motion?

And was it serious enough?
