She spoke to our South Baldwin Democrats club March 25. I believe she has qualified.
She's working on a website now.
"Former Mobile County Treasurer Vivian Beckerle said Monday that she plans to challenge U.S. Rep. Jo Bonner, R-Mobile, for southwest Alabama's 1st Congressional District seat.
"We just need a good Democrat running," Beckerle, a one-time Republican who now practices law in Mobile, said in a phone interview.
She added that she is putting together the paperwork and fees to qualify with the state party. A public kickoff has not yet been scheduled. Among the issues that Beckerle singled out as central to her campaign: the war in Iraq, the high price of gas and Republican-pushed tax cuts that she said primarily benefit the wealthy.
Party primaries will take place June 6, with the general election to follow Nov. 7. Bonner plans to seek a third two-year term, according to a spokeswoman.
Beckerle acknowledged the difficulty of competing in a district that has not elected a Democrat to Congress in more than 40 years, but she saw an opening in what she termed Republican "infighting," coupled with the ethical cloud that has enveloped such prominent figures as former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay of Texas.
"They're beginning to run from each other," she said.
