| I am moving to Gadsden in a month, is there anyone close to there? |
|
I was born there but we moved away when I was 13. My entire extended family lives there and the economy has forced a move back in with the parents. I have not been back there for more than a week since I was a young man.
It seems like lunacy to be moving to such a depressed area during a recession. Is there any building going on? Do I even have a prayer of finding work? Are racist, First Baptist assholes still running everything? Will I have to hide my liberal views?
I need a liberal scouting report of the area. Any info that could help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm a Tuscaloosa native, but I don't think I've ever even driven through Gadsden. Is it really such a depressed area? The whole country is on the highway to hell, because of Republican policies, but it seems that places like Alabama are doing better than others, because of Republican patronage.
I don't like the political climate of Alabama, that's for sure. And I think that the Republican party is, at its core, a white-supremacist, criminal organization. But I've never experienced fire-breathing Baptists chasing me with pitchforks. I've gotten a few of what I considered to be disapproving looks from people regarding my "Obama 2008" tee-shirt, but far more "thumbs up," and certainly I was never threatened with violence over the whole thing.
I can remember exactly one lady that has posted in the Alabama forum that I explicitly remember living in Gadsden, and I could probably count her total DU posts on my fingers and toes. She seemed like a real nice lady, and maybe she will see your question.
So, I can't really give you an answer. I will just say come on home, and help us turn this thing around. We're never going to turn this thing around if all the liberals leave the state.
Good luck to you!

| 2. I have several friends in the Gadsen area particularly JSU. Depending upon your skills you should be |
|
able to find employment.
You asked about "building going on" and I assume you mean either residential or commercial construction.
Alabama's real estate market has not been affected as bad as in other states in fact house prices in some urban areas are quite stable.
I've lived in many states and countries and found the old tale accurate, one finds the same type of people in a new town as those who lived in the town from whence one just came.
Welcome back to Alabama. :hi:

I'm close, from Cullman, but everything is still ran by the holier-than-thous. It's pretty much the whole state. Tonight I went to Wal-mart to pick up some snacks for a sleep over and to let my kids meet up with some friends they wanted to bring home. I saw a beater car with a rebel flag attached to what looked like a cb radio antennae. Not 10 minutes later, I saw a woman with a rebel flag blanket covering her newborn. Cullman may be a little worse than Gadsden, but the whole area is backwards. Sadly, I've lived here my entire life, lol!

My job and personal travels bring me to Gadsden pretty regularly.
My wife and I have a circle of liberal friends here in Calhoun county that get together for potluck parties every month or so.
It would be great to add another DUer to the mix!
Get in touch.
