| Is it possible that the Gulf disaster will lead Alabama leftward? |
|
Edited on Sat Jun-12-10 05:13 AM by Syrinx
I would like to think so, but I doubt it.
That would be the logical response on behalf of our fellow Alabama voters -- toward more environmental regulations, and a tighter rein on big business.
But I suspect that the issue will somehow be demagogued and blamed on the "socialist" Obama administration.
Do we have any leaders in this state that are willing and able of showing the Gulf Disaster as what it really is, mega-corporations that are going to be the death of all of us, and everything that we love?
"Paging Ron Sparks."

| 1. Nothing will lead Alabama leftward IMO |

Fortunately for me (born and raised in Alabama) and for the country FDR was a Democrat and so Alabama voted for him. If FDR had been a Republican (the party of Lincoln), Alabama would not have supported him IMO.
Also very fortunately for me, back before the GOP welcomed white racists into the party, and Alabama was Democratic, Democratic Senator Lister Hill was able to sponsor the National Defense Education Act which provided loans to students studying to be teachers. The loan was administered directly by the government and I think the interest rate was 3%. Each year that I taught school, the loan was decreased by 10% up to 50% of the total loan. Good for me and good for the country.
Can you imagine either of the present Alabama senators supporting something that would actually help middle and lower class students as well as the country?
Economically, the majority of white Alabamians vote against their own interests, but that's the way it is.

Neither of our senators give a damn about the people. But, then, apparently the people don't care much for themselves, either, judging from the way they vote.
Willful ignorance and blind, tribal loyalty are so sad and so destructive.

I lived in Bay Minette from the age of 6 months to 4 years. My father took a metal trashcan to the beach and filled it up with white sand for my sand box. (That was back when the beaches were practically deserted.) Relatives would come and visit so they could go to the beaches with us.
So sad, so very sad.

That mayor seemed pretty sensible. I would never vote for him, per my firm "no votes for Republicans" policy, but he did Orange Beach and the Gulf Coast proud in that appearance.
trof, I wonder if you'll be going to Theodore to see the president speak? I considered coming down there, but I don't really have enough confidence in my car to make the trip. If you do, please report back.

The state of my birth and first five decades would not even elect John Sparkman these days -- and he was a pretty conservative Dem.

He blackballed a man that LBJ was going to appoint a judge because the man had agreed to defend the FBI informant in the Viola Liuzzi case if there was a trial.
