SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- California will make history this week with the nation's first paid family leave program.
Starting Thursday, July, 1, workers will be able to receive partial salary when taking time off for urgent family situations.
Advocates of the program say people will no longer have to choose between family needs and a paycheck.
Every worker in California who pays into SDI -- state disability insurance -- is eligible. It applies to full-time and part-time employees -- even those working in very small businesses.
State Sen. Sheila Kuehl, D-Los Angeles, authored the Family Leave Bill.
