| What's everyone doing with Prop 2? (farm animal caging)? |
|
The left-leaning Sacramento Bee opposes it, arguing: "this proposition could prompt many egg producers to relocate to outside states and Mexico, and ship eggs back to California. Such an outcome would do little to help the condition of animals and could do real harm to a small but important segment of the state's farm sector."
So in other words, we would lose business I guess.
But my heart is telling me to vote "yes," which I think I'll be doing.

Just seeing the caged chickens, piggies and little cows in such a terrible place made me think this is a good thing. I have friends who work for Cat rescue and they are voting for it too.

I don't mind paying more for food if it means animals are being raised humanly. We try to buy eggs from local producers anyhow, so we're already paying top dollar.

I don't care if it causes food costs to increase a bit. It's the right thing to do.
I already buy cage-free eggs and grass-fed meats whenever possible.

Think of the pain and suffering and then ask yourself if that is something that you want sustaining you.
I'm voting "YES".

And as long as there are country-of-origin labels (I seem to recall the Bush admin. is delaying a labeling law from taking effect?) I don't think many people would eat eggs from Mexico, because that just sounds like a great way to spend a week puking your guts out, you know?
As for the Bee's position? This is an overgrown farm town.

Arizona and Oregon already passed similar laws and as Leftymom points out, the country of origin information will allow people to know that the eggs came from Mexico.
The fact that such a minimum space requirement must be passed by the general public speaks volumes on the sorry state of conventional agriculture. It is only about making money and despite years and years of trying to get these industries to treat the animals more humanely, they have refused. Thus we the people have to speak up. Now that this proposition is on the ballot, they are all crying like babies. Believe me, they had plenty of time to propose their own standards, but refused.
Think of all the construction jobs that will be generated by more roof space.

As for "left-leaning" Sacramento Bee, I've been noticing it moving more toward the center. For instance, they endorsed Dan Lungren, the Republican now representing the 3rd Congressional District over Bill Durston, who is a not only a Democrat, but a liberal Democrat. Some of their coverage is disappointing to me too. They don't seem as hardline Demoratic as they used to be.

I've noticed that.
Not necessarily a bad thing depending on the issue, but IMO, they've been choosing the wrong one(s).
Lungren? :wtf:

is exactly what I said to myself when I read that. I'm in his district and I REALLY am hoping Durston wins. Having the Bee endorse Lungren doesn't help AT ALL.

The "losing business" line is just a scare tactic. Most farms are corporate enterprises as it is. The cost of upgrades would equal just a couple cents an egg (chickens lay lots of 'em, doncha know) and negigible rises in the cost of meat.
