That was a helluva way to wake up ....

I am quite sure you had it worse - I think the 'square of the distance' applies ....

I was in Riverside for the Landers quake, and that ranked pretty high on my fear meter too ...

45. we thought someone had dropped a bomb on us - literally.

We'd lived through the previous decade of shakers with not much problems. But THAT morning was something I doubt I'll ever forget. We left the state 6 weeks after and haven't been back since.

We had a neighbor who had to physically hurdle furniture to get out of her apartment. Two days later she noticed her thigh swelling. She had broken her thigh bone and had been so pumped up by fear she didn't realize it till the swelling started. THAT totally blew my mind.

I lived in Upland when the Sylmar Quake hit. UNREAL ~~ the water sloshed out of the pool like crazy and things fell out of my kitchen cupboards.

Stepped outside the front door and watched the tops of telephone poles sway about 5 feet .... That one lasted a good while too ...

I always fear that 'it's gonna get even worse' ....

I now live up north where there are no faults and very little activity...but Northridge was the Daddy-O. I lived in North Hollywood which we referred to as 'Slightly More' North Hollywood after Northridge! That bedrock saved our butts but everything I owned was on the floor.

20. Two of my best friends lived in the Valley when Northridge hit.

One lived in Chatsworth and the other in Woodland Hills. The house in WH was a total wreck. My pal in Chatsworth was OK...small amount of damage. WH...unbelievable! I lived in Riverside at the time, and it shook the hell out of me all the way out there. I can see why it scares you ~~ it was bad where I was and I can imagine that the LA area was a hell of a lot worse. I remember seeing one of the overpasses on the 10 Frwy had collapsed. That was one hell of a quake.

I used to never get freaked out by any shaking....but now as I am getting older and in my 60s, I really do not like them very much at all.

...I had awakened about 2 minutes before it hit. And...it shock pretty good even tho it was centered way out by Yucca Valley.

...like around 1992 maybe. It hit at 4:24 AM ~~ I remember looking at the clock. I had gotten up to go to the bathroom, got back in bed, looked at the clock and WHAM!

It really tore up some areas of Yucca Valley...

we'd get tremors all of the time. In the middle of the night, half asleep, I'd raise up from bed and say that's a 5.0. After awhile, it seems that you can actually gage the intensity of the tremor. When we lived in Moab UT, we got a tremor in the middle of the night, I shot up and said that's a 4.0. Next morning I asked some of my friends if they felt the tremor-half did and half didn't. My one friend went hiking early in the morning and said the dust was still in the air, where some large boulders came tumbling down from the tremor. Ya know, living with quakes for awhile, they just become part of life.

Of course, we left Ferndale two months before the big one hit the Petrolia and Ferndale area. A few of my friends had Victorian houses slide off their foundations. Some of the aftershocks were in the high fives and low sixes.

I went to College of the Redwoods. Loved the campus--quail would be meandering through the campus--beautiful trees. The shops in Ferndale are unique. I haven't been there for awhile, but there was a candy shop, where they made the candy in front of the window. There was a store, two levels, that had antiques, historical memorabilia and sold items that you normally can't find at the grocery store anymore. Near the antique store, was Santana's, that sold the coolest unique silver jewelry. Did I tell you I miss Ferndale?

49. I used to take them a lot better, but Northridge messed me up.

I was 1 mile from the area that had the greatest ground motion ever recorded in an American quake or maybe any quake, I forget(which was a few miles from the epicenter, interestingly). I expected to die. It was that bad (I was in a 4th floor loft bedroom in a condo).

Now I get shaky after smaller quakes, even though I tell myself it's no biggie. It's a physiologic response and part of fight-or-flight.

We get little shakes practically every day that are hard to distinguish from a bus going by - those don't bother me.
