Thinking of moving to San Diego. Is it more Liberal or Conservative or both?

From what I gather on the web, San Diego seems to be more Republican Conservative but some sites hint toward it being more Liberal and some say both. Whats your take. I'm probably going to move there regardless and politics won't play into my decision but I was wondering what I should expect. I'm a die-hard leftist born and raised in the valley area of Arizona so even if it's uber-conservative I'll be somewhat used to the naivete. Any comments would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

2. Mr. KT grew up there. It is very conservative, especially the further out east you go.

In the heart of San Diego city, I'm sure it is more liberal, but the bar isn't set real high, if you know what I mean. SD county did go for Obama, but I don't know if that is an anomaly (is this the right word I'm looking for :shrug:,) or a hint of things to come.

Currently, we live two counties to the north and still have connections to the area.

3. Lot of lily white high income republican enclaves in the city and the county

Some funky areas within the city limits where the politics would suit you better.

A few areas east of San Diego City populated by lower income whites where there are a lot of fundamentalist churches.

Do some research. There are well defined neighborhoods. Find out all you can before you make a commitment to move into one.

5. San Diego has a TON of these fundamentalist churches. Tons.

And a lot of what I call mini-megas. Smaller churches that fashion themselves after the mega churches. Lots a scary stuff going on there.

Think Miss California kind of hate going on there... :scared:


Mr. kt's brother, who has since passed away, was a music minister at a fundamentalist church. I've seen these things up close. There is a lot of homophobia, anti-immigration, etc. going on. Blech.

4. San Diego city is relatively blue

North inland and east San Diego County trend Republican, as does Coronado and the Point Loma area along the coast (with the exception of Ocean Beach).

The Union Tribune (local fishwrap) is extremely right-wing, but they just got sold and the new bosses have taken over this week (and immediately notified 192 employees that they'll be getting pink slips by July). May indicate a change in political leanings, but I wouldn't bet on that.

7. A lot of conservatives, but like many counties the 2008 election changed it a bit...

San Diego voted 54% for Obama and indeed nearly all major Cal counties went blue except Orange. I live less than an hour from San Diego and can say that yes there are conservatives but also many minorities and tons of culture. Overall, San Diego is a nice place to live regardless of political climate.

9. Both - I've lived here since 1962

I live in City Council District 3, which is by far the most liberal. We had two openly gay Democratic men opposing each other in last year's runoff election for that seat on the council.

Political makeup varies greatly from one neighborhood to another. I'm sure you can find something to your liking.
