Stealing luggage at LAX?

A family member told us to travel with carryons, since the airlines no longer guard the carousels, so anyone can just walk away with a luggage.

Anyone heard about this? I could not find any news report..

1. No one's been guarding carousels since the mid 90's

If you check bags, be at the carousel right when the bags arrive

and wait and wait. Or ours are the last to arrive.

3. You know I haven't heard much about luggage being stolen

in the past few years. I know it used to be a big problem in the 70's but then 60 minutes did a big expose on the problem and they airlines have really cleaned the problem up.

I know that you guys can use rain, lots of it, but why later this week when we are visiting?
