By his own admission, no one except Tom Tancredo himself could make his race for re-election a competitive one. He is an engaging pol, but his misguided, one-note approach to his congressional post often puts teeth on edge.
Tancredo, in his third term in Congress, has been waging a zealous crusade against illegal immigration. It's angered and confused some of his constituents and colleagues, and we'd like to see Tancredo come to a more sensible place on the issue. And to be sure, he should understand that there are other issues, too.
The 6th Congressional District is majority Republican, and two years ago we wished the GOP would field a better candidate. Now, to our surprise, the Democrats have done it, nominating a longtime Republican who shifted parties.
Joanna Conti is a fair-minded and outgoing businesswoman who would represent all residents of the district, not just those on the oh-so-far-right side of the immigration issue. We urge 6th District voters to give Conti their vote.
