First Time DC Visitor, is this hotel Safe??????

My brother and myself and his girlfriend hope to visit DC for the Sep 24 protest. We are looking for a really cheap hotel room and we found the one below. I know nothing about DC and where the good and bad parts are.

Check out this hotel and see if this would be safe for a few high school teens to stay in for a night....

basically is this on the bad side of town, would it be safe to walk down the streets or anything?

4. I saw something with New York Avenue on there and if that is the case...

NO!!!

I think that's near the section with the WashTimes and it's a pretty seedy and unsafe neighborhood.

I also see the room is $70/night (plus 14.5% tax). Not sure how many people are crashing in your room but try for someplace either in Alexandra, Rosslyn, Arlington or Crystal City. They're actually over in Virginia but much nicer neighborhoods and you can be near the Metro

5. define 'safe'

would I walk alone on the streets there at night? probably not. But it is right next to Gaulludet University and five blocks from a Metro. If you're saving enough money, you're looking at a 8 buck cab ride from Union Station for three of you, after 10 or so, I'd probably do it.

If you're city folk, and don't mind a little wasteland, you'll be fine. But do take a cab.

7. If it's anything like Temple University in Philadelphia

I wouldn't walk outside the campus area of the school because North Philly reminds me alot of that area of Washington DC.

Plus the Washington Times is nearby - and that's just :scared:

8. I wouldn't call it 'unsafe' per se

it's really more of an industrial wasteland, lots or railroads, multi lane roads and industrial parks. not a lot of residential stuff to cause problems.

6. You'd probably be fine, but I have to echo that

it is a seedy neighborhood there. Anything on New York Ave NE is going to be fairly questionable. If you are looking for cheap, there might be some good opportunities in SW near the waterfront. Nothing goes on over there, but the bonus, safety-wise, is "nothing goes on over there."

9. I know that area

I was carjacked at gunpoint the Wendy's where New York intersects with Florida after a softball game at Gaulludet. The scary part is the part of NY Ave where I was jacked is a little safer than where your hotel is.

You are fine in your hotel but you are in the city and in a neighborhood where I would strongly recommend NOT wandering around at night. There is not much around there and no real reason to be walking around. Additionally, there is little foot traffic, the only thing I can think of near by is a liquor store and a Texaco gas station

By the way, I was with a friend (2 good sized guys) and we were jacked by some little shit half the size of us but, he with the gun gets the car.

10. Try finding a hotel in Silver Spring MD, Crystal City VA, Arlington VA

and ride the Metro in. Look at the Days Inn in Silver Spring. They have availability for @ 75 bucks plus taxes.

11. I live in Crystal City (Arlington) and strongly recommend you

stay there rather than in the city if you can find a good price.

There are a lot of hotels because it is right near the airport, and it is near three metros and is right across the river from the Mall.

Although no place is perfectly safe, it is safer than many parts of the District and less expensive than staying in a comparable hotel in DC.

on edit--I just looked up your hotel on the map, and if you were my son I would not want you to stay there.

There is a Days Inn in Crystal City. There's a Courtyard by Marriott and similar suite type hotels--you could get a suite and all split the cost of one suite rather than get more than one hotel room.

12. New Courtyard Marriott in Silver Spring - walk to Metro.

Lots of restaurants around in newly re-developed area.
